Should i contact my ex or wait for him to contact me?

this guy was my first love and we always swore no matter what that we'd be friends. i love him dearly, but i'm not trying to win him back. i just miss his company. we had a bit of a falling out and haven't spoken since he left for college without saying goodbye or seeing me one last time. (i last saw him at his graduation) is it totally a bad plan to try to speak to him again?
