  1. do it.if not for the hunt just for the experience.you may find you like archery for a past time.i know i do.i shoot a long bow in my back yard all the time.arrows cost a little bit but hey what don't cost right.

  2. Do it.

If someone's willing to teach you and you have a bow to practice with, it would be a shame to turn down such an opportunity.  As long as you have a knowledgeable archer supervising and you are using common sense, you have virtually no chance of being injured.

Archery can be frustrating to learn in the beginning, but once you learn how to maintain a good consistent anchor to draw from, (and you are using the correct arrows for the bow) it can become a very enjoyable activity.

  3. Are you worried about safety? or about making a fool of yourself?  A few words about safety, this is what we teach at our range, it probably is not the same at other ranges but our rules revolves around getting your attention where it's supposed to be, putting you in the mind state to shoot when you get to the line.

    1.  No arrows out of the quiver until you get to the line and until you've made sure that no one is in front of the line.

    2. Always walk

    3. Always pick up arrows on the ground in front of you when walking to the target.

    4. Approach the target with caution when pulling arrows.  This is when most accidents happen.  Approach targets from the sides.

    5. Always be aware of your surrounding.

    6. Never point a loaded bow at anything you don't intend to destroy.

    7. Have fun.

If you are using your dad's bow, make sure it's not too heavy for you.  Starting with a bow that is too heavy is not much fun and also not good for your form, or even possibly detrimental to your health.  Your first time out you really should be using no more than 30lbs.

  4. Take the bow to someone who knows about archery and the equipment. It shouldn't cost much to get started and give it a try. If after 200-300 arrow shots if you don't like it, put the bow back in the attic and forget about it. Give it a try again in 4-5 years.

  5. I would have to know what it is that you are worried about first in order to accurately answer your question and concerns.* What is your problem with and about archery?*
