i'm 15, but i have a slight curvature of the spine. 4yrs ago i went to see a specialist and had x-rays but he said it shouldnt affect me unless it worsens. it hasnt changed since and i'm still as flexible as an average person if not more and i have no trouble with it whatsoever. i'm really interested in doing judo but not sure whether i should. what are your thoughts?

  1. Hi, I' m Italian, and I' ve got the same problem to my spine...  I'm 15 too and i do judo for ten yrs... In summer when i don't do judo I' ve ever a annoyng backache, and when in sectember i  restart to do judo i fell me better...

  2. Judo shouldn't hurt your back but if I could say try Brazilian jiu-jitsu if there is a school close. You'll love it. The first class should be free so you can deside. There are a lot of the same throw but they use them less. why waiste the strength when you can just trip him and submit him. well anyways your back should be fine if not you could drop it but try one of the two and you'll be hooked for life. good luck.

  3. Find a judo instructor and tell him your story. He will be experienced enough and glad to let you know what he thinks.

Judo is actually a gentle sport, you learn to use your opponents strength against him.

Even your falls and rolls will be easy for you when you learn the easy way to do them.

Well good luck and find that judo class and have that talk with the instructor.

  4. If you doctor says its ok then go for it. Judo is fun and safe with the proper supervision. You will learn to breakfall first and then a couple simple throws. You will also learn some basic randori which is like jiu jitsu but different. Since spinal locks are illegal and won't be tolerated I think you would be ok. Give it a try I think you will like it. By the way century judo gis are good for the money! Have fun and be safe.

  5. you should but just get check ups from time to time

  6. well judo is a throwing martial art so during training you may get trown on your back for some of the techniques so that could effect you. maybe try another martial art like jujitsu that is arm locks and stuff. good luck.

  7. You could just get into freestyle wrestling in your high school and save your money. Then after that get into Jiu-Jitsu because Judo is just a sport version of Jiu-Jitsu anyway. Learn wrestling and then submission holds, you will be one bad *** panda.

I have never been a big fan of the kicking professions. Jiu-Jitsu  was designed to defeat "punch and kick" fighting arts so why bother to learn a lot of stand up fighting? Just a thought.

  8. Well, if you saw a specialist and he gave you the green light, go and God bless you.  Do what makes you happy, just train safe.

  9. I've had scoliosis all my life and I've done many different styles of ma and it never affected me.

  10. Tell the instructor, see what he thinks, I don't see a reason for your not being able to participate in any martial art.

Judo is a good art for strengthening the body and with stretching and conditioning you should be just fine.  As a Krav Maga instructor, I would take a paraplegic and teach him around his limitations.  You don't sound like you have more than a mild scoliosis, so go for it.

The duty of any instructor is to bring out the best in every student, as it is your duty to inform the instructor when things hurt, not just when they are tough to do.  Martial Arts are about overcoming your limitations, exceeding yourself.  A good  instructor will bring out the best in you, is is your job to give it your best.

  11. If your not 100% on whether it's ok  or not, ask your doctor or specialist.  If you get the all clear go to a dojo and pretty much just fill them in.

See what the instructor thinks.  And if it's all good with them then why not.  My friend does MA and she loves it!!

  12. As a MMA I will recommend to start with Tae kwon Do and Karate, because of better stretching in that way you are doing your own teraphy. After 6 months you can combine TKD & Karate with Judo or you can switch to Judo. Good luck.

  13. If the doctor says yes then go for it...  No point asking people on here cause they're not medical experts and even if they are they can't give you the advice you need without being familiar with your personal history...

If you are concerned then just get a regular checkup once you start and take it easy until you figure out your limitations if any.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy you martial arts journey
