  1. no five gallons isnt big enough for a goldfish. get a betta instead. They can live in a 5 gallon tank.,

  2. no

1 fancy needs 20 gallons and 10 for each additional

1 common/feeder/comet/normal/carnival needs 50 gallons and 20 for each additional

also never buy a fish with a tank

you need to buy your tank first and cycle it for at least a month

  3. Nope, try a betta.

  4. Nope, wrong. Goldfish grow huge and need a lot of space. Get a heater and use it for a betta.

  5. NO  goldfish require a much bigger tank size than 5 gallons. They get huge! I have one ten inches and the other one is 8 inches. They also require a very powerful filter. They make alot of ammonia. They need a tank of atleast 15 gallons or bigger. Nothing smaller.

  6. No. Put 3 female bettas in it instead. Goldfish need at least 15 gallons. The only reason I would ever get a goldfish is to feed my cichlids or for an outdoor pond. =)

  7. buy the biggest possible tank you can buy it will save you more money in the future.

    kOi keeper & goldfish keeper.

  8. Pet stores do and say anything to make a sale, a goldfish need a 20-30 gallon minimum (depending on the fish).  To thrive.  5 gallons barley a foot long.  A goldfish can get up to 2 feet in length and live upwards of 30 years....rethink your decision.

  9. Even by getting a pearlscale which is the smalles of the goldfish (next to the mini's) a 5 gallon won't work.  Walmart also sells a 10 gallon that comes with everything (remember no heater needed) for 23 bucks.  Go for that one that is to say you are getting a fancy goldfish and not a common or comet.

Your goldfish will soon out growyour 5 but one fancy will do well in a 10

  10. If you are thinking about buying a goldfish, stay away from tanks less than twenty gallons.

  11. People on here often overestimate the amount of water you need for a goldfish. Assume 2 gallons of water per inch of goldfish (not including fins) if you want them to live comfortably.

That being said, five gallons is really too small for any amount of goldfish. Even if it has a filter and pump. It is not that the goldfish cant live, it is just that there is not much margin for error. It is really easy to kill a goldfish in a water volume that small. You should consider a ten gallon aquarium to be the minimum.
