I am going to buy a new guitar next week.I thought of getting an sg ,because of its weight although i heard les paul has a better sound. Can anyone tell me the exact difference and is it okay for a lead guitarist to get an sg ? cause i heard its more for rhythm, but i am a lead guitarist in a band.

  1. both guitars play and sound different.  the neck shape is different. flat surface vs round. so they feel and play different. you should got play alot of different ones before buying. try a ESP viper 400 also. they play better than a sg and have a better price... i have 2... i wouldn't buy a gibson sg standard because the quality is not very good... but thats my opinion.

  2. check out the artist you like, Angus Young AC/DC plays a SG I think his lead chops are just fine, then again check out Slash Velvet Revolver he plays a LP and he does just as well.

  3. Les Paul, definitely.  i think they sound better, and depending on the model you get, they are as heavy as an SG

(wiki sez: Physically, the SG has a shallower body than the Les Paul, and thus is much lighter)

  4. Les Paul. I have one and I love it. they are beautiful guitars and Idk if its just the way i keep mine or just les pauls in general but it stays in tune longer and plays great

  5. get the SG standard. its the sound of a les paul without the weight. or if you want the les paul sound you can always get a fender fat strat (humbucker in the bridge and two single coils in the middle and neck)
