I've heard getting an aftermarket exhuast system doesnt add any power or even lessen it. The only reason i want either one is for the sound. It would be WAY cheaper to just get a bolt on or weld on muffler so what do u guys think? I just got my first car so i'm on a tight budget! Also i don't want it to be really loud cause i don't wanna be annoying when i'm at a stoplight. PS: I am NOT a ricer. I'm gonna be focusing on engine upgrades then work my way to visual.

  1. first off, what kind of car is it?

an after market exhaust system typically is a larger diameter than the original. This allows the exhaust to exit the engine easier creating less back pressure and therefore more power. it would also increase gas mileage a little bit (not too much)... think of it as breathing out through a straw. the muffler itself adds to the sound of the exhaust. a good aftermarket muffler would complement a good exhaust system because, again, it would decrease back pressure. typical "cat-back" ,ie from the catalytic converter back pipes and muffler, are sold in packages from places like Summitt racing or Jegs. they cost about $250-$400. they do tend to last longer because they are stainless steel or aluminized steel. typical horse power gain is about 5-10 depending on the car and how complete of a package you get.

headers are the next thing to consider. they are typically the most expensive, but if you can afford them, it would give you a complete exhaust system for maximum flow. cost is about $300-$450 or more depending on if they are ceremic coated. typical gain is about another 5-10hp on top of a good exhaust system.

I have an 84 Trans Am with headers and complete exhaust with a 350sbc in it, and i'm not much louder than a newer stock mustang or Trans Am.

if you are going to do more engine upgrades, a complete exhaust system from the headers back to the muffler is a must if you want all of your upgrades to complement eachother and create max power.

basically, think of your engine as if it were you lungs breathing. you wouldn't be able to work as hard breathing through a straw as compaired to breathing without one.

cleaner air in and out builds power, so an air filter upgrade should also be considered. K&Ns are about $50.

  2. if you want a better sound all you have to do is change the muffler to get that, check out the flowmaster website.

  3. Get a dual exhuast system (with and X pipe not and H pipe).  They get rid of a a lot of back pressure.  Which can get you up to 5-15 more hp.  Also, be sure to get a good muffeler, don't just get one for sound.  The sound doesn't mean anything if you can't back it up with performance.
