  1. Well to be perfectly honest, if you are asking such a question in this forum...there is no way you will ever be a PM (portfolio manager) for a fund.

But to humor, an MBA is pretty much a necessity to move into Portfolio Management. In fact, a CFA (chartered financial analyst) is a near necessity as well. Most people who move into that space usually start from one of the following areas (no one goes blindly into the area...ever)......1) Trading--There have been people who work in the trading pits, prop trade (proprietary trading), and work in off-floor trading for I-banks....2) Research--a more popular entrance begins through the world of Equity Research. You generally start out as an associate doing the "grunt work" for your analyst and after a few years experience, move into the analyst role of covering stocks. After a few years of experience in this area, you may have an opportunity to become a PM for the space of stocks you covered for a hedge fund. (if you have any specific questions, please feel free to shoot them over)

  2. Go to a firm that manages hedge funds and ask.

Avoid an MBA at all costs.  Maybe, some other kind of financial position, if necessary.  To make sure this kind of work is what you want to do.

If you like what you're doing, and an MBA is needed to further your career, then get one.  Your employers might even help you pay for it.
