Im 38 wks and Im trying to decide if i should get my membranes scraped at my OB apt tomorrow. Ive already started dilating and effacing and have non stop BH contractions every day. From what my OB told me the procedure won't work if the baby isnt ready so Its not like i'd be forcing anything to come along if its not time. Just wanted to get others opinions. Thanks!

  1. i was told the same thing. my appointment was at 9 am on a wednesday. she scraped them and by noon i was on my way to the hospital. i noticed about an hour after a little discomfort but it felt like constipation so i didnt really pay any attention, then it hit. i had my son about 7 pm that night. i would try it, the worse that will happen is you wont go into labor.

  2. oh i'd just have it done if i were you! like you said it will only happen if the baby is ready so why not!

  3. Since you've already started dilating and effacing, there's no reason to get scraped.  You'd only want to do that if nothing has yet happened.  Things are progressing nicely, let them continue on their own.

  4. Why not just let things progress in their own time? You may in fact be forcing things if the baby isn't ready because if your water breaks, you HAVE to deliver, even if contractions don't start. Once your water breaks you and your baby are at considerable risk of infection. So if your water breaks because of the scraping and the baby or your body aren't ready, they will have to induce you or else do a cesarean. Why not just wait a few days more and let nature take its course?
