The internet says the dust from removal is dangerous but leaving them in is not. That sounds counter-intuitive.What do you think?

  1. If your not having any problems, I say leave them alone.

I had mines removed for cosmetics reasons. But the insurance doesn't cover the porcelain (white fillings) so it can be expensive.

If there was a problem with the use of dental amalgam it would certainly show up in those who use it on a daily basis. No study that I am aware of has demonstrated any such connection in dental personnel.

The controversy you refer to exists only in the minds of many whose main arguments depend on studies that are considered flawed by most ethical researchers or on anecdotal information that cannot be reproduced in scientific studies.

If you do choose to have your restorations replaced I am certain you can find a dentist willing to do so, but you should be aware that the mainstream of the dental profession considers it unethical to remove amalgam restorations simply because they contain mercury. You should also be aware that unless a tooth is isolated with a rubber dam during restoration removal, and high volume evacuation with water spray also used, more mercury will be ingested that can possibly happen with years of wear with normal chewing.

  2. Get them removed only if that paticular tooth is hurting you.

If that tooth is not hurting you and it has a mercury Hg filling it, dont mess with it.

    you might not know.

Eating fish has more mercury than what you have in your mouth.

  3. the mercury is released into your blood stream during placement AND removal but when the filling is intact, the filling should be fine with no leakage.

my amalgam fillings lasted over 20 years.  I just had them removed because I joined an esthetic dental office and we only did white/cosmetic fillings.  Otherwise, my fillings were fine.

  4. I had my mercury fillings when I was 7, but then in my twenties I went to a different dentist and I had them removed and then the dentist used the clearer stuff instead on where the old mercury fillings had been.

  5. These fillings have a 100 year record of safety.....there is nothing to worry about.....leave them alone, and if and when they need to be replaced you can get something different.
