  1. It does not matter whether it is boys or girls but ensure that they are from the same litter so that they can live together in the same cage. Even dwarfs can exhibit territorial behavior if they are not from the same litter or are not of the same age group.

There are two types of dwarf hamsters commonly called as russians - one are Campbells and the other are Winterwhites.

Both are equally cute and great to have as pet hamsters. However as litter mates (if you plan to have more than one of the same s*x), Campbells seem to get along better compared to winter whites (I have seen this only from my experience, it has not been proved scientifically).

Otherwise they are so similar it is hard to tell the difference between the two. And this you should keep in mind when buying from pet shops since pet shops tend to make the same mistake in differentiating Campbells from winterwhites and tend to sell them wrongly.

Read up on the following link how to differentiate them so that you can be sure you are buying the correct type from the pet shop -

Since you have had syrians before, taking care of hamsters is nothing new to you and is the same for bothe syrians and dwarfs. However the main differenc you would find between them would be -

    1. Size - handling dwarfs is a little bit tricky compared to syrians since they are smaller in size and more agile.

    2. Taming - Dwarfs generally take more time to tame compared to syrians which are friendly right from the first time of contact.

    3. Regular Handling - Tamed dwarfs have to be handled atleast once a week otherwise they would become untame whereas syrians once tamed are tame for life.

  2. i have two male Russian dwarf hamsters and all thou i love them to bits they are very annoying as they are too small to cuddle like a Syrian and also they seem to not get as attached to the humans as Syrians do as they have each other,

but if you really want Russian hamsters then go for it and it doesn't matter whether you get two boys or two girls as long as they are both from the same litter  make sure you buy them from a decent pet store though as they are more prone to nasty infections than the Syrians, and they do not live as long about 1 - 2 years if you are lucky

    good luck!!!

  3. If I can recall correctly what i read, was that Syrian hamsters are solitary animals.

On another note, I've kept dwarf hamsters before and it's really NOT advisable to keep 2 males together. I've kept a male and female and the mate like crazy. Once the babies are like 1-2months old, they get attacked by the father and were bitten very badly and died. It was heartbreaking.

  4. two girls would be best as they wont fight each other and they don't smell as much they also have a sweeter nature than boys.

  5. Girls. Males are more likey to fight with each other, unless they are from the same litter. But I would still go with girls to be safe.

  6. girls!! boys will fight a LOT, sometimes until the death.

It's good to hear you are doing research!!!
