or just give him one or the other? my baby wont latch on so i have been pumping milk but when he is fussy and wants to be held i cant get a chance to pump more so i give him formula and then he gets really gassy and fussy. i feel bad not giving him breast milk but its too hard pumping and i feel bad that he has bad gas so i bought formula for gassy babies should i keep giving him both or just formula?

  1. Try breast feeding first, each breast fully, then express & give it by cup or bottle. If still hungry then give formula. Mixing is OK as long as its a standard formula.

  2. Well, if the formula is making him gassy and fussy then you should try giving him as much breastmilk as possible.

Formula never made my twins gassy or fussy so after 3 weeks of pumping (I also had latch issues with my twins) and formula feeding I went right to formula because it was too hard doing both.

Have you seen a professional about his latch?  I never did that... kind of wish I had.

Good luck either way.  Maybe you could try a gentle formula and see if that helps with the gas?  Some kids are just more sensitive.  My girls were really lucky that formula always agreed with them.  They were happy with it.

  3. The formula is what will prove to make him sick if something is going to make him sick...always remember SOME Breast-Milk is BETTER  than NO Breast-Milk...so if you cannot Totally B/F then yes alternate...but ALWAYS START the feedings giving him your Breast, not the formula.

  4. some breast-milk is better than none so dont get down on yourself, and the important part is to feed a hungry baby, whatever you may choose. I found a nipple shield very helpful at getting my baby to latch when she was this age. You can get them at babies r us or target by the pump section. Give those a shot, you might not even need to pump if she goes along with the nipple shield. switching wont really hurt your baby, after all they do it in the hospital when a baby needs food and no breast-milk is available.

  5. No you should not give it both it can get the baby sick. Anyways if he gets fussy just eatheir try to pump more or lay him down. Its not right to give it more than one

  6. Yes you should. I alternated with my twins. They were preemies so they couldn't latch on, so i would pump and bottle feed breast milk and with low milk supply i also had to supplement formula. Some breast milk is better than no breast milk. The babys immune system will be stronger from breast milk, but there is nothing wrong with formula. Dont feel bad you are doing the right thing with giving him both! Good luck

  7. it will not make him sick to do both...drs have given me the okay to do this as well bc my daughter has the same problem...its important to continue breastfeeding however as much as possible more than formula bc it will increase your milk supply and also the breastmilk is super food for babies with antibodies formula just has basic nutrients whereas breastmilk has tons.
