  1. I love both. I'm a Spaniard so I'm obviously biased toward my own country, but I love it in Italy, at least the places I've been too. People are nice in both countries, I actually find Italians shared the same sort of loud tone and sense of humor. Both countries are famous for great food, although, as you may guess, I prefer the Spanish one. Especially in the North. People in the posts above seem to have an obsession with Andalucía and Madrid. Don't get me wrong, these are beautiful areas, but I much prefer Cataluña, Vasc Country, Asturias, Galicia...And whatever Sue said up there- I'm sorry to disagree, you seem really nice- as a Spaniard who has lived half her life in Galicia and the other half in Barcelona (Catalonia) it IS Spain. I guess Sue said that because 10% (in Galicia) and 15 % of the population in Catalonia want independence, but as you see, it's not the majority and it IS Spain. Just not the typical expected Spain with bull fighting and Flamenco. The North has certain areas which are bilingual, but also speak Spanish, that, I must add, some people consider it's better spoken than in the South. Especially in areas like Salamanca and Valladolid. In the North you would find one of the best foods in Europe, not so many tourists, lot's of culture, green mountains...

I would go to both countries if you can. Or if not, both would be  good and you could leave the other one for another visit. Just have fun and be careful with your handbag and purse, as both are known for pickpockets.

  2. I would go to Spain, but I'm biased lol.  I live in Gibraltar and spend a lot of time in Spain.  I would definately avoid the Costa del Sol though as there are too many tourists.

Try exploring the Cadiz province.  I find the beaches really great and big and not so crowded.  If you are into wind or kite surfing try Tarifa.  Bolonia is very tranquil and doesn't have much except for a huge beach.  If you are not much of a beach persone explore the many white picturesque villages in this province.

  3. I would totally go to Italy!

  4. Italy, but both would be gorgeous. I like Italy's food and scenery and Spain's architecture and language.

  5. Go to Italy!

Italy has lots of culture, good food and friendly people whereas Spain has waste wherever you look, the food is lousy and the people are arrogant - at least in the areas where the regular British tourist travels.

  6. I think they are equal.  I went to Italy first.

  7. Let see... I have been to Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona in Spain and Genoa, Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan in Italy. I would recommend Italy! Rome and Florence are by far the best cities! (well, that i saw). Venice was a little theme-parkish for me to tell you the truth. As I rode around in the water taxis, I was sure a fake hippo would pop out of the water! haha. But Florence has so much art and culture, and Rome is just amazing with the Colosseum, Vatican city and Forum. I didn't get a chance to visit the Amalfi coast in Italy.. that's next on my list!

  8. Spain is HARDLY full of British expats.  There are a clutch of them in the Costa del Sol region, but as soon as you get out of the highly populated city areas, you find things get very native again.  Just stay away from Málaga, for the most part.

Even as close as Nerja is beautiful.

It really depends on what you want out of your vacation.  Personally, I love the cities and all the history and museums.

The other coasts of Spain are very pretty, but I'm not all that much of a beach person...love beaches, don't care for disrobing...So I would probably spend all my time inland in either country.  Sooooo much history in both!!!

I'm kinda looking at Italy for a future vaca (cause I just did Spain again) doing some wine country in Tuscany, Cinque Terre (as close as I'm likely to come to beachin' it) and Naples/Pompeii.   Can't discount Rome and Venice, either.  My hubby wants to go to Milan...

I'm extremely partial to Spain...lots of neat little cities around Madrid-Rioja for wine tours, La Mancha, etc.  Sevilla, my favorite city in the world...so much to do there, Jerez de la Frontera (more wine country) and the Pueblos Blancos...Barcelona!  I had so much fun there (but must keep in mind that it isn't really part of Spain) and the wine/champagne country there, beaches, art, soooo gorgeous!

If you go to Spain, definitely spend some time in Andalucía.  It's my favorite region, and you will love it!  don't miss the Alhambra in Granada, and if you have time, get to Ronda.

    *edit*

And the food is excellent in both countries, so, maybe the only deciding factor is whether you prefer pasta or rice....(lots of rice in Spanish cooking)

  9. Italy as Spain is a toilet full of irritating British tourists.

Venice or Barcelona?  Hmmm, so difficult to decide...
