6 weeks ago i bought a 12 week old lhasa apso cross pug. I'd asked my boss before hand if it was ok for me to bring a dog to work an he said yes. After i bought the pup and took it to work he said he didnt think it was such a good idea. Now i have a puppy i love to death but i have to lock him in the house on his own. My mum lives up the road an checks on him an takes him out twice a day but i'm moving soon and dont drive so wouldnt be able to get home to check on him. I do love him to bits but wonder if its best to rehome him as 8 hrs a day seems too long for a 18wk old pup to be on his own. Somebody please give me some advice on whether i should keep him or not! Thankyou :-)

  1. You're in a tough situation, what do you work as? I think he should be fine, especially if your mom checks on him twice a day so he can do his business. I have a maltese and so many times I thought about giving him up but this happens to a lot of toy dog owners because they think aw they're so cute but after the fact realize, "hey I have a life and its not this dog." Big dogs can be alone, don't need as much attention, hold their bladders really well, etc. Its unfortunate because you may rehome him only for him to be rehomed again and again and finally to a shelter where if nobody adopts him, he will be put to rest. Its sad but it happens to these dogs a lot, so it would be great if you just stuck to your commitment and saved another little toy dog's life. Get him neutered while your at it, it will be doing your part as far as less toy puppies being born to have fatefully bad lives. I made the same decision as I am advising you, and I got him neutered. He grew on me so much he is 9 months now and yes I leave him alone he is ok he just gets so excited when I got home and I can't even think of seperating with him. I also admit though its hard if you live alone! So don't feel like you're a HORRIBLE person if you decide against my advice, because with toy dogs a big family where people are home all the time is best...I had a big family when I got mine at first but its just me and my mom now because my sister and her son moved to Arizona (long story). So you just have to think about it and make the right choice for you and your dog, and if you're going to give him away do it soon or else it will be harder on you and your puppy.

  2. How do you think the rest of the world manages? Lots of people have pets and work 8 hours a day. Keep him in a crate and just be sure to take him out before you go to work and as soon as you get home. Dogs usually don't like to pee in a crate so he will learn to hold it.

I have a dog at home and I work 8 hours as well. He is fine. He never pees in the house and just take him out before and after work and then again at night. He's good and happy!

  3. You should hire someone to come out every once in a while and check on him so then you don't have to get rid of him!

  4. my advise... you either need to consider giving up this pup or adopt a second.  One puppy by itself for 8 hrs per day plus you have a life outside of work too?? will not be very good.  Seperation anxiety and may tear your house to shreds, p**p and pea in revenge.   Even 2 will be an issue initially but once they form a team it will be less "guilt" for you and less lonliness for them leaving alone all day long.

  5. That's a tough one..... If you love your puppy and would be crushed if you had to give him/her up than maybe you can ask a neighbor to check up on him every so often... Hope it works out!!!!

  6. 8 hours is too long to leave a dog on its own, especially as he's only a young pup.  Options include changing your job or hours to fit in, employing a doggie daycare type of firm, or asking your mum if she will baby sit the dog during the day.

  7. Well you do love your dog... I know how you feel. You may want to look for another job or get rid of him. This is sad, I know and is making me very sad. It's for the best and I think you should do whatever you should but make sure it's in the puppy's best interest. Good luck.

  8. do what you feel is in the best interest on the puppy.
