I have just started running more miles per week (20 or so) and I am now getting pain in the inside part of my knee and am getting shin splints. I ice each of these for 20 minutes twice a day, but should i stop running for a period of time? If so for how long?

I am also waiting on custom orthotics to be made to help me with arch support for my flat feet....

  1. Rest.

Shin splints aren't too bad.  Usually they go away on their own or with some stretching and strengthening exercises.  On the other hand, joint pain is bad news. This is not something to run through. It will only make the problem worse.  You need to take some time off.

  2. Yeah rest, but only if they're really hurting. I had shin splints and kept running through them, and now I don't have problems...I think b/c I strengthened those muscles. Also, massaging longitudinally along the shin bone really helps get the blood circulating and helps A LOT!  For your knees- try some glucosamine chondroiton, it might take a month to work, but it does work.

  3. your body is telling you to stop....so stop
