  1. You should stop him because if you don't get on his case now he probably wont stop when he gets older. Besides you don't want him to have buck teeth do you?

  2. 12 months is pretty young so it is probably pretty normal and okay.  This article from ParentsConnect suggests getting them to stop around age 2 because after that is when it can cause some issues with their teeth.

  3. i would try to put a stop to it. my parents use to have to put this nasty tasting kind of stuff on my thumb at night so that i wouldnt suck it when i was in the 6th grade. my mom STILL sucks her thumb to this day!! and my best friend's cousin who is 24 does too! im so glad i dont anymore.

  4. This is pretty normal.  My 5 year old started when she was about that age, and still does, but I think she is trying to stop herself.  Just wait and see what happens.

  5. my four y/o son thumb sucked until about 2 months before his 4th bday. he had a "security" pillow and whenever he sees "his" pillow, he'll start to thumbsuck. We hid his pillow instead to make him stop. I dont know if it was the right thing to do because he still asks us every once in a while about his pillow.Begging to give it to him. Im just afraid that if we give in, he would start to thumbsuck again. He has also began to be a cry baby. I dont know if we started to late to make him stop from thumbsucking or if he is still not ready to stop.

  6. So you mean your ONE YEAR OLD is sucking his thumbs and should you stop him.

  7. Its best to stop a child from sucking his thumb because it can cause his front teeth to push out.  But sucking his thumb is a form of security for him or her so you need to find something to replace it, like a blaket, stuffed animal or favorite toy.  But some children take longer to stop than others so be patient with them.

  8. I think you should stop letting him suck his thumb because it's basically gonna give the same results as sucking a pacifier when you're 4 or 5. Your son's teeth are probably gonna start growing they'll get pushed outwards if he keeps sucking on his thumb. (I know this because my cousin didn't stop with the pacifier until she was 6, and now her teeth are pretty much ruined.) So I suggest you stop him now before he gets a habit of it and does it when he's older. :D

  9. My brother dated a 29 yo who sucked her thumb. My daughter never sucked hers, but I agree with those who say that it's okay to suck your thumb at 12 months. As he gets a little older you may offer a pacifer since they are easier on his teeth. Trying to stop around 2 is probably best. I've seen 5 yos with "binkies" in their mouths and that's quite extreme.

  10. I think a one-year-old is fine sucking his thumb.  Just don't let the habit go on forever.  I agree that after about 2-3 years old, you should stop him from doing it.  Make sure you research ways that will minimize stress when you finally make him stop, since it's like a binky or "security blanket" for him.

  11. My 4 yr old still sucks her thumb.  I try to tell her to only do it when she goes to sleep and when I see her doing it I tell her to stop.  If you can find a way to break the habit now, do it.  It gets harder the older they get.
