ive been planning for over a year now to move to the philippines for at least a year just to experience whats it like there.

i came to canada when i was 8.. and ive never really gotten a chance to live the "filipino way"

ive heard stories from my family how it was living there..

now i want to experience it all..

im a culinary management graduate.. worked here and there as a cook..

and now i want to know if im qualified to work at hotels in manila as a cook.. not just a prep cook.. as a real cook..

is it worth it?

i would live there, experience the good and the bad philippines can offer.. im ready for a new beginning..

what y'all think?!

stay in canada? or move back to a place of nothingness..?!?!

  1. I don't see why you shouldn't try.  Whatever experience you gain, at least you'll know how the Philippines is really like.  And you could always go back to Canada if you find the country not to your liking.

  2. "im ready for a new beginning.." you said it yourself.

    give it a try....

  3. Philippines is a lot different from Canada as you already know. One of the differences being the economy. Minimum wage there isnt it $5 a day?

    Doctors earn as much as a nurse would in the US. Teachers can expect to make equivalent to someone who works at Mcdonalds in the US.

    As long as you intend to spend your pesos on things like food and living expenses and your reason for going there is just to experience then I assume you could "get by" like everyone else is doing.

    Food= $1-$3usd per day

    Housing= $50-$200/month

    I would suggest saving some money on the side before you go, If you are serious about it. That way you can live there and experience things without the worry of cost of living.

    If however you plan to stay with family while there then it can make things a lot easier. As for a "new life" and "new begining." Philippines is a third world country. Most people spend their time trying to leave the country for opportunity rather than stay.

    Dont expect to earn the same type of living as you can in Canada or the USA. If your serious about going to the PH then make sure you learn all you can before you go. There are a lot of things you need to be aware of to make sure of your safety. Philippines has its good and bad sides just like anywhere else.

  4. Culinary management graduate? wow, lots of offers and job oppenings would be available for you sir!

    Sure if you really want to try to live the filipino way, trying won't kill...

    "or move back to a place of nothingness..?!?!"

    ^ BUT if your going to insult and rant philippines being a place of "nothingness", better watch your back sir...

    It's up to you. Filipino people are very hospital and nice people, so no worries, you won't have trouble fitting in... (if you know tagalog [language] you'll have no trouble)

    But if your not that willing to give it a shot, then, don't.

    choice is still yours!

  5. Mate I'm glad you wish to go and experience your roots but take it from someone who know's what they're talking about. Your better off on just going there for a really long holiday rather than trying to work there which I can't even begin to tell you how impossible that is. There are millions of people there who can't get a job and you think you have a better shot? Plus the wages there pay peanuts compared to what you make in your country. If you really want to stay there for a year my advice is to save up,get an extended visa,go there,see and experience and then go back. If you really like it you might be able to get dual citizenship but the money is the biggest factor there. Just simply not enough to have a comfortable lifestyle if your an ordinary person. I too one my first visit was like you but I soon understood that it's a wonderfull place that I didn't belong in because its not my home. Suffice to say I'm sure you'll understand that wishfull thinking and reality will hit you once your there. Best of luck with it all.

  6. I think you will LOVE the Philippines if you like the laid back type of lifestyle and simple things in life. A lot of our relatives lived in Canada (Toronto and Montreal) for more than 30 yrs but they still came back (for good)to spend their hard-earned CAD here. They are all here enjoying nightly expensive dinners and weekly parties. Their kids (20-25 yrs old) come to visit them every now and then and they really like it here. One of my cousins even want to stay and study here.

    You should just be willing to embrace the Filipino culture and learn the language to "belong" here.
