About a month and a half ago I weighed 110lbs at 5'7". Now, after being on vacation and taking some advice from some people, I am 115lbs and 5'7". It sees that most of the weight I gained was in muscle which is a good thing except that now when I run, I find it difficult and sometimes impossible to complete a run. I find myself walking alot. Since I got back from vacation I havn't been eating alot maybe 1,200 calories a day. Why am I fatiguing when I run. I am still underweight but I feel like I was stronger when I was thinner. Or maybe is it just because I havn't been eating alot these past few days? should i lose the 5 pounds i gained or not? HELP!!!! btw i am a 15 year old girl

  1. I am no expert, but when you are a teenager, because of the changes your body goes through, you should be eating a bit more than 1200 calories a day.  Your body burns a lot of calories during that time and it is important to eat healthy.  but also not go overboard.  you need to see a doctor to find the right diet for you and just a personal thought...  I think you need to eat a bit more (but healthy) and not worry about your weight right now...

  2. no you shouldn't lose anymore weight 115 is an excellent weight  especially for a 15

  3. If you are 5'7" and weight 110 lbs, it sounds a lot like you are underweight.

I am curious as to how you come to the conclusion that the weight you gain is muscle.  Were you working out during your vacation?  Five lbs of muscles is quite a bit.

I don't think you should lose any weight.  But I ain't a doctor and don't know your background or health status.  I suggest you see a professional (nutritionist, doctor etc.) about this.

Your difficulty in running is not your weight, it is from eating too little.  1,200 calories is not a lot.  Every time I run, I burn 1,000 calories an hour (on avg).  Granted I am 5'7" and weight 147 lbs (male).

You should eat more (healthy foods, fruits, veges, pastas etc.).  Whether you are running or not.

  4. I can just about guarantee that the reason you're fatigued is due to a lack of calories, not from carrying the extra 5 pounds. As an active person at your weight, your body probably burns around 1500 calories per day at rest. That means that before you even start your run, your body is short on energy and at 5'7" 115 lbs, you probably don't have much extra energy in the form of fat for your body to consume to make up the difference. Also, at 15 your body is going to grow, which means that if you try and stick to eating the same amount of calories that you did 6 months ago, you're going to be under eating.

My recommendation would be to start eating 15-20 min. before a run. It doesn't have to be much, maybe a 1/2 bagel or something similar so you don't cramp up from the food bouncing around in your stomach. This, along with plenty of fluids, should give you energy to finish your runs. Follow your workout with a recovery meal. My favorite is a bagel with a high protein yogurt, a little fruit, and maybe a piece of plain grilled chicken. You'll want to get this in within 30 minutes of finishing your workout, as this is when your body is going to digest the food most efficiently.

I know its tempting to try and cut the weight of, thinking thats what holding you back, but I'm racing triathlons 20 lbs heavier than I was last year at 6'3" 230 lbs and have cut over 10 minutes off of my sprint distance time. Even though I could compete in the Clydesdale (men over 200 lbs) class, I've felt fast enough to race in the 25-29M age group instead, getting 2 silvers already this season.

  5. well im 14, almost 15 and i weigh 113 but it's about the same as you and i'm not underweight like everyone else is saying because i took one of those bmi things and it said i was normal

  6. 115lbs and 5'7" is underweight. If you're working out and fatiguing it's because 1200 calories is about half as many calories as you should be getting as a growing teenager. Stop worrying about your weight and give your body the fuel it needs.

  7. Maybe you just need more vitamins.  Taking vitamins will help with your fatigue, and you will feel and look better.

Besides that, 5 pounds isn't a big deal, especially if you think it's mostly muscle.  It NEVER hurts to work out though.  If you exercise, you'll feel better too and should have less fatigue.

ETA:  Wow, I didn't realize that your weight was underweight.  It's true.  I still recommend vitamins.

  8. omg.. your only 15 girl.. this is when you should start eating especially during your puberty and exercise..and 115lbs is underweight when your 5'7 you should be at least 120. Don't lose another 5lbs you need to gain some more weight. You're probably fatiguing because you're not eating enough. Eat more, but eat healthy
