OK my league is TD only with yardage bonuses. The yardage doesn't play a big factor. Currently I have Marshawn Lynch and Brandon Jacobs as my two best options. We protect one player. My friend offered me a 3rd round pick and any of his backs Maroney, Larry Johnson or Michael Turner for Lynch. My question is should I make the deal? If so who should I pick from him? And in that case are any of his guys better than Jacobs?

  1. Hi gyoung,

Well first let's look at how Lynch performed last year.  Lynch put up very nice numbers for a rookie, coming in at 11th overall in total fantasy points (169.9).  If it wasn't for AP, Lynch may have won rookie of the year.  For awhile it looked like Lynch may have some legal problems, but it appears that has not subsided.

When you look at the options he's offering as trade bait, I think that L.J and Moroney are your best options (Turner will lose carries to Norwood).  If you compare these two payers you'll see that L.J. scored an average of 12.1 fantasy points per game (in the standard scoring system) while Maroney put up 10.1.  I personally think that L.J. will bounce back this year, so I'd give him the nod over Maroney.

If this trade was straight-up I'd balk at it, but if you're also getting a 3rd rounder (essentially a 4th rounder since you protect one player) then I think that deal could be worthwhile.  That extra 4th could land you an impact player and you could very well end up getting the same or better value with L.J.

In my rankings, I have Lynch rated 11th, L.J. rated 12th, and Maroney rated 17th among running backs.  You can check out my entire RB rankings in my source list.  On my website you can also create your own player rankings using drag and drop.  It's free.

  2. Listen, protect and keep Lynch. Take a chance and deal Brandon Jacobs for that 3rd round pick and Larry Johnson or Turner. They both will have a better year than Jacobs. Then with that 3rd round pick, take a sleeper runningback like one of those rookies, like J. Stewart from Carolina, or Rashard Mendenhall from Pittsburgh. Or even the guy from Detroit. And if your not to shore about any of them, you still can trade that 3rd round pick to someone else. Because there's still going to be good talent availible in the 3rd round, trust me !!!

    You got em'

  3. I'd take the deal with LJ.  I don't value him much less than Lynch in a TD heavy league.  In fact, he could easily outscore Lynch and you're picking up a 3rd in addition.

I'm not a big fan of Jacobs and in fact I'd rather have any of the guys mentioned over him.  He seems to rank high in ADP but he's in a committee situation and only scored 4 times last year.

  4. Turner's a bit of a wildcard here...  out of Tomlinson's shadow.  Warwick Dunn's shadow is not that big so I look for MT to be featured in Atlanta... if there is such a thing as a feature back anymore.

  5. Try to bleed him for lynch.  I don't think he'll be good for that many TDs

  6. Tommy, if your going to sate facts make sure they are right, Lynch does not have a hit and run on his record, it was dropped down to a moving violation with a 100$ fine

  7. I would trade him lynch for johnson and the 3rd round pick. Remember lynch has a hit and run on his record now. LJ will bounce back and be as good or better than lynch. with your extra 3rd pick you can grab  a pair of WR or a elite WR and another RB for depth.
