Should i make this trade?

Alright here is my situation. I have a 9 year old Azteca mare, that I traded a 15 year old pinto mare for. She is a well-trained dressage horse, but I do not much like dressage. She is a level 1 dressage horse, and her last owner always had her in the ribbons.

I posted her for sale, and a possible trade for a jumping horse. A lady e-mailed me almost immediately. She has a 13 year old Apendix gelding, who has been working over fences. He is 16.1hh.

I was wondering if it might be worth my time since I am more into jumping. Even though he is 13 years old.

Any opinions would be great!

  1. He might be lame but if he is well taken care of go for it. Have a vet check him over. Also ride him and make sure you ask her why she is trying to get rid of him or trade him. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Horses can easily live into their late thirties and there have been a few that even made it past fifty.

Unless you're in the world of race horses, that's a perfect age.  He's just old enough to have been close to fully trained and settled into his personality, is fully developed physically, and has 20 or more years left that you can enjoy with him.  Most of the horses I worked with were over 30-one of which no one could see how he managed to go 38 years without someone strangling him.  He acted worse than (and was almost as healthy as) a three year old.

I am a little concerned though with you trading horses so often-I can't see how anyone would have enough time to get close enough to their horse to really be able to work with them.  Of course, we do not have the full story which could very well make a lot of sense.  I'm just someone who gets really attached to the animals I work with and even if they aren't quite what I need for a particular purpose, I'm loath to part with them.

Did you try your mare in jumping?  I've known a number of horses that could learn more than one thing.

  3. well if you dont like dressage and you like jumping GO FOR IT!! just make sure your other horse goes to a good person! ANDDDDD>>>>>> Dont worry about the age i was looking around for a horse today and there was one that was almost 50!! ( thats in human years too! ) thay said he still had a little spunk too! And as long as he's ( the jumping horse ) in good shape thats awesome! I'd say do it as long as the pinto get a nice person to stay  with and care for her!

    hope this helps

  4. sounds like a good trade for you, but make sure that you see the horse/ride the horse and get to know it first also be sure that it isnt on any sort of drugs to calm it down because it could be dangerous or mad. i know of people who do this!

  5. if he has been well cared for a 13 year old has alot of life left in him

Ride him and see if the two of you get along, if you do, trade
