I'm seriously thinking about changing careers. Right now I'm a hairstylist but hair hasn't ever been my passion. I want to work with animals but I heard vet techs don't make that much and don't want to go back to school for 2yrs and pay out money when I earn a decent wage now. I also thought about becoming a dog groomer or trainer. But I having a hard time deciding what to do. should i go for it or just stick with hair even though I'm not that happy?

  1. I wouldn't quit my present job until you find another.  As you know, the cost of living is rapidly increasing!  Stick with your present job and think about what really excites you.  Then ask yourself is it legal, and can you possibly make a living at it.  Then ask yourself what skills, slash education will be required.

  2. Don't stay in a job you're unhappy in. I was a vet tech for 7 years, most don't make much money. For me, it was a labor of love, with a lot of heartache, and a lot of great times. The ones in emergency clinics make the most, or in specialty clinics.

I am now learning how to groom, and learning how to start a pet sitting business.

My boyfriend was a dog trainer. He made great money, and it was rewarding.

  3. Follow your heart within the bounds of meeting your personal needs.

Do you have the savings to support yourself while you’re changing jobs?

Does anyone else (a spouse, kids) depend on you for financial support?

Do you know what training/education/certification your new career requires? What does it pay? What are the job opportunities? Do you know of organizations that would hire you or would you have to start your own business?

One suggestion I have before you jump into changing course is to put in some volunteer hours at an animal shelter. I will give you experience in the field, an understanding if you can handle dealing with dozens of animals a day, and potentially contacts who can help you later.

  4. Well I think it would be silly to stay a hairstylist if you hate it.  But I think you should try to keep the job, at least part time, until you have a new job, or enough money to support yourself while you are looking for and training for a new career.
