First of all, is a miserable job..... fresh out from college..... got hired into an accounting firm..... i had to do all the receptionist job plus tax job. the pay was below market value. having to make coffee to my boss, buy lunch for him, answering phone calls, filing, banking and tax..... is a job that i cant focus at all. However, i do learn a lot of tax stuff. i'm in dilemma. all my college friends get far more better pay than me. all they focusing is just tax. I hate going to my job every morning. all i can said i work like a slave in this company.

i don't know what should i do right now? Should i quit or stay? by the way, my employer put a six weeks notice clause in my contract. which company wanted to wait for me for more than 1 months? any suggestion?

  1. Depends were you are and what the job market is currently like in your city.  In Canada there is an extreme need for staff in Accounting firms.  If it's the same there and you plan on continuing in Accounting (CA or CPA) then do not worry about leaving your current job and finding a new one.

  2. I agree with everyone here in regards to NOT quitting your job. Regardless of what's in your "contract", it's not a smart thing to do.

In regards to your "six week notice clause", check to see if your state is an "at will" state. This "at will" status usually supersedes these agreements between employers and employees and makes them null legally. Usually, as in non-compete agreements, the "must give 'x' time" clause in contracts is usually designed to prevent someone from going to a competitor. Ask for a copy of your contract if you don't have one. Check to see if your employer is following the agreements they made. Are the chores you lament about in your job description? If not, in my opinion, you can claim breach of contract as the things you wrote about is NOT in your job description.

If you decide to quit and your contract is "iron clad", you can always perform your job poorly (showing up late, leaving early, surf the internet and go to places on the net you aren't supposed to go to, dress poorly, curse and act unprofessional, etc).

    Good luck

  3. Don't quit until you have another job- so start looking for something better!

  4. Definately do not quite before you have a new job!

  5. Dude, don't bother about pay. If you are learning a lot and people are good, then stay put.

Think about it, if you learn all the tricks of the trade, few years down the line you might be earning much more than your friends. Knowledge is invaluable.

You SHOULD not quit a job if -

    1. You are learning.

    2. You like the people and your boss is respectable.

    3. The company has a good reputation and will open doors of future opportunities.

    4. You like the place.

    5. You are learning what other companies might not teach.

If you are still uncomfortable with the pay, then you better talk to the HR. As far as the notice period is concerned, i dont think companies follow it too strictly, esp if your job isn't very important. They may leave you in 10-15 days. But some companies do deduct some amount from the pay for notice period less than a month.
