im on a swim team, i started just to stay fit and be in shape, but being around all the competitive thinking has really gotten to me. im not the best swimmer in the world and i have team mates that let me know that every time i jump in the pool. i just had my banquet today and i received nothing but a jv letter and a overheard a few of my peers snickering about how much i suck.

at the same time my best friend is on the team and was the real reason why i started to swim. he is ranked in the state for swimming and i hardly talk to him a practice only at school and i the meets. i also want to stay fit for my spring sport season.

what should i do?

  1. quitting isn't the ansswer. i quit and would've totally regreted it but the coach came and hunted me down to rejoin. once u get the feel of the water and work out by lifting weights and using strechcords u will get better!!! don't worry about the others... make it a point to BEAT THEIR BUTTS!!! and u will! they probably have been swimming longer than u! HANG IN THERE!!!it will be ok!

  2. Stick with it.  When I was in High School I went out for the Wrestling team.  Lost 18 (pined) straight times. (worst wrestler on the team).  I used that as motivation to improve.  My senior year I made it to the state tournament. Swimming is a great sport just put some effort, find a year round team to join and work on the fundamentals of the strokes and turns.

  3. quiting isnt the answer. maybe your not the best swimmer now but you will never get any better if you let the other peoples comments dictate how you live your life. just stick with your friend and ignore the others. practice in your spare time and when you get better than them you can just smile and know how ignorant and immature they were. good luck.

  4. Unlike other answerers, I'm not going to immediately say, "Don't quit!" I think it's more complex than that. I don't think you should stay in a negative situation just to "show them you're not a quitter."

It sounds like you've got some real jerks on your team, but that isn't permanent. The character of high school teams changes from year to year as the classes graduate/move up. However, the coach sets the tone, and it sounds like your coach hasn't worked very hard to establish a supportive team atmosphere for everyone -- regardless of ability.

If you're not in love with swimming, I think you should look into the other sports your school offers during the swim season. There might also a club sport or rec league at the Y that might suit you better. There are plenty of other activities that can keep you in shape without giving your psyche such a beating.

If you DO really like swimming, or if it seems like it is the best match of all your options, then do I encourage you to stay and ride it out. If you do stay, I think you should discuss your concerns with the coach.

    Good luck with your decision.

  5. you shouldnt quit, they think they will win!! if i were you i would stay on the team! s***w everyone and getting your JV letters is still good! perfect yourself and dont worry about losers like that! GOOD LUCK.

  6. I am on my team and haven't even lettered in two years. tell the others to shove it up their a** and go on with life. Swimming is soo much fun I couldn't even imagine quiting though I suck. People laugh its what they do just work hard, swim hard, and have a d*** good time.

  7. Hang in there. The others who snickered about you are probably not your friends. Don't worry about them.

Stay fit by swimming. Don't quit, you will regret it someday if you do.

    good luck
