well i've been in love with figure skating since i was four years old but at those times, i've never get to skate because we are really poor that time. they cannot afford to enroll me in a skating lesson ( even in group lesson! ) so even though i really wanted to skate, i have no choice but to agree with my parent's decision!

now that im 15, they have given me the chance to skate! right now im in the gamma level! but still i cant skate regularly because we really dont have enough money!

if only i started skating when i was four years old maybe right now im already a figure skater doing spins and jumps!

now that i started at such a very late age, should i still skate? should i still continue skating?

  1. Follow your heart...

I understand that money is tight but don't just quit! It is much harder to pick up once you already left. I would suggest skating for fun. You don't have to be competitive and try to win a national title, just be there the days you can and enjoy it. Maybe cut back on your lesson time once a week or every 2 weeks. And hey, your almost old enough to get a job so don't worry things will get better.

  2. Yes!  Keep going!  Even though things didn't work out for you earlier, you still love skating -- now that you have the chance, go for it.  Even if you have to take breaks from lessons, practice hard in between, so when you can start again, you're stronger and able to keep progressing.  Keep learning and maybe work a deal with the coaches who teach the group lessons.....once you're a little more advanced, maybe you can teach the little ones as payment for your lessons.  I know of some skaters who did that growing up.  So even if you're in and out of organized lessons, you can still practice, ask some friends at the rink for tips -- maybe even a good friend at the rink would be willing to "coach" you.  Maybe there's some skill you have that you can teach her.  For example, I have friends at the rink who do that....one grew up skating, so she gives her roommate skating lessons and the roommate gives her rock climbing lessons.  At 15, you're around the age where you can get a job too.   Maybe even work at the rink and pay for a little bit of your skating.  Good luck and don't give up!

  3. If you really want to get into it for the competive side (Im sorry but) its probably not going to work.

HOWEVER: If you wanna do it recreationally GO FOR IT! It can be such fun! You can probably even get some doubles before you get too old!!

  4. you "must" continue....

  5. Coulda shoulda woulda!

Do what you enjoy.  You'll be spinning & jumping one day.

  6. There is nothing wrong to skate for the pure fun and love of the sport. It's great exercise so go on and skate.

  7. if u love skating i would say u should skate. I skate too and we definitely aren't the richest family on the block . but I used to go to open skate with my friend that skates and she would teach me things that she learned from her lessons so I kno where ur coming from. I started skating three years ago and for my birthday I got a couple private lessons and all I kno are two foot spins and my jumps are waltz, toe loop and salchows  so don't worry if u skate ur skills will catch up with u!

    good luck skating!!!: )

  8. of course you can still continue. I started skating at age 10 and im doing all the jumps and spins. if you love it and give your full heart into it then you can get to the cool jumps and spins.

  9. Yes you should.

Talk about old? Talk about me. I'm seventeen this year, started getting onto the ice at fifteen with some help from complete strangers who turned out to be the best buddies I can have. I only started lessons when I'm sixteen, spent about three private lessons brushing up my basics, and then as the say, the rest is history.

I'm easily injured, but skating is my passion. While I have stopped skating on and off because of either my coccyx injury, knee injury, money problems, I still get out to practice for the sake of my love when I feel fine enough. You don't have to be on the permanent register for lessons. Learning for friends is good too.

I have learnt to stick to friends who don't judge you by what brand of clothes you're wearing, whether you're good enough a skater to be their friends, because you know, they'd like something in return for "teaching" you. Hopefully you'll fine these friends too.

You should continue skating, but bear in mind that you shouldn't pest your parents too much about wanting to skate. My mum sometimes feels bad for not being able to afford the lessons that I want, but seeing me happy on the ice is good enough.

    Follow your heart, my friend.

  10. keep skating!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Goodness - if you've been given the chance to skate - then take that gift and make the most of out it (especially since you have a love for figure skating!!).

If you are in gamma now, you will be jumping and spinning soon enough if you continue.  Check out the next 2 levels . . . in Delta you'll be doing bunny hops . . . in FS1 you'll be doing 2 foot spins and waltz jumps.  http://www.paradefsc.org/basic/levels.ht...  The harder jumps and spins just continue from there!

I often wonder where I have would been with skating if I had started as a kid.  In fact, I even wonder what if I even started at YOUR age!  Then I have to tell myself there's no sense pondering about the past - because we can't change it.  But we can do something about the present.  I did learn to jump and spin, compete, perform . . . when I started in my mid 20's!  So at 15 - you can do it!

Perhaps skating "later" has made me appreciate the sport even more.  I don't think my parents could have afforded skating lessons at the time anyway.  But they did a good job making sure I could take care of myself and have a career . . . which down the road allowed me to pay for my skating when I chose to do it.  It was on my own terms and I made sure I enjoyed every moment of it!!

So make the most out of what you have now!  Soak in what you are taught in your lessons and practice them with the precious ice time you have.  No goofing off, no chit-chatting - focus focus focus until you get off the ice.  I'm assuming you get a free public skate on your lesson day . . . so do take advantage of that time!

Check to see if the rink offers a monthly or even a yearly unlimited pass.  It's a huge chunk of money you have to cough up in advance, but if you go regularly with that pass, the price per session will be waaaay cheaper.  My rink offered a yearly . . . but I was a nut and went skating every day and night . . . so it only came out to like a buck or 2 per session.

Maybe for those birthday or holiday gifts, instead of asking for "things", maybe ask for those passes/gift certificates to the rink or just $ for skating!  Very soon you may need to get your own skates (if you don't already) . . . so keep that in mind as well!  The good thing is your feet probably aren't growing as much now - so you won't grow out of your skates too quickly (than say, if you were 4, 5, 6 +).

So yes, continue skating if you can . . . as long as you can . . . and have an amazing skating journey starting "now" - wink!

  12. Yeah you should still continue, its your love & it can be your passion. Doing things you love can make you feel more happy & it can get your mind relax from other things. Plus it would be fun,who knows what you have been missing out.lol

  13. yah but you can still work on your stuff Figure skating is a tough sport and you have to practice alot like 2 hours per week ! that's tough and u don't have to be the right age to start u can be 15 and start figure skating too! but your jumps and spins need time for you to practice!

  14. Really hard dilemma here, had the sameone myself, financially, you should still sakte, if you enjoy it. You probably won't make it to the big leagues, but not everybody will, if you love to skate and can't stay off the ice or think about it for one whole day that you should still skate! Good Luck!
