Im going into high school, and i would really like to play golf. I have knowledge of golf, but ive never really practiced. Ive been to a few driving ranges, but never on a course. Should i actually practice and wait until im a sophmore to join, or join in freshman. do they teach you how to play during the year?

  1. sure! i would suggest hiring a golf pro to give you a few lessons. then just play on jv. it's better to start now than to start when you're, say, a senior and everyone is really really good.

  2. Defininatly start now.  The earlier you start the better.

  3. They will help you and you will have practices. I say tryout fo the team if there aren't tryouts then just join. You will get pratice then and make new friends

  4. depends on how competitive your school is at golf, i'm 15 and just had my first day of tryouts and we have a pretty competitive team. i barley made the team last year but it's looking pretty good this year. look at it this way, you have nothing to lose. but practice and get on a course as much as you can. and learn etiquette, it's really important in high school golf. good luck

  5. Dude definitly go for golf. Gold is the new gig u know what i mean. When you play you get to chat  alot with your buddies and enjoi playing. its really awesome

  6. im the captain of my high school golf team won districts as a junior, i started out on jv and practiced a lot and made myself better, it was well worth it, now im gettin college offers, so stick to it, its fun.

  7. Join with no expectations. then have fun no matter what happens. then you will get better than somebody. Maybe everybody.

  8. you have to make the team first!

  9. I was a 4-yr letterman, have placed in the top 3 in my state championships, and have been playing for way too many years.

I would recommend waiting until your sophomore year unless you want to try out for the JV team.  You will definitely need at least a couple dozen experiences on an actual regulation size course before you plan on trying out for the team.  Work on getting your 9-hole score in the 40's, and once you are there, you'll know you've got what it takes to be able to try out for the team.

More than anything, practice your chipping, putting, & shots from 100 yards and in much more than the full swing.  Learning these types of short shots will get that score down in no time.

Take it from an old pro, get as much on course experience as you can b4 trying your hand at the golf team.  You really won't be taught a whole lot about the game by the coaches.  And look at it this way, it's extremely rare to find a golf coach that actually is a pro or knows anything about the golf swing itself. 10. Most of your classmates that go out for the golf team will have experience playing the game.  Go and talk to your golf coach and get his opinion.  I would advise you to take some lessons, practice and play several rounds before attempting to make the high school team.

Don't let this discourage you, golf is a wonderful game and will give you a lifetime of memories.  you can golf until you are 90 years old.

Learn the game and have a lot of fun.

  11. yea go for it but have in mind how competitive your team, my team is very competitive, as in state tournament contenders.  so a lot of freshmen that just showd up thinking theyd make the team were in for a rude awakening

  12. Might as well join early!

  13. I joined my golf team this year and I knew nothing.

The coach will teach you how to play and you'll practice at a course before the season starts. Join as a freshman, there's nothing to be scared about.

  14. no bad idea!!! really bad!!

  15. depends how into golf your school is, I'm currently in the middle of my high school tryout as a junior, my school doesn't teach you how to play golf and expect you to shoot under 80 consistently (not an easy feat for someone who doesn't golf normally). However, there's no harm in trying and you'll gain experience for your sophomore year at the least.

  16. go for it now. golf is an amazing game. you will regret not picking the game up now rather than later. i kno i do.

  17. Hey I would join now. If I had the opportunity to play tennis in Freshmen year I would have. However, do to problems with changing schools all the time I wasn't able to play tennis until my junior which is where I'm at right now. I honestly am terrible at playing tennis but the more I practice the somewhat better I get. So don't be afraid to put yourself out there to play. We all have to practice more before we can get better. So by joining the golf team now you'll probably be better by next years end in your sophomore year.

  18. no join as a freshman, there will be lots of beginners so you won't be alone.

  19. The best thing to do would be wait a year but during that year practice and play on a course as much as you can. Maybe see a local pro for lessons to get you started then go from there. Good Luck.

    Have a good one...

  20. yes

  21. do the team its very fun and they do teach you during the year
