  1. A sand wedge is 56 degrees.  There are other lofts for a sand wedge from 54-58 degrees.  You may want to get a gap wedge(52 or 53 degrees) to fill the gap between the pitching wedge and a sand wedge.

  2. a 56 degree wedge is considered a sand wedge.

  3. i'm twenty years old right now and have been a scratch golfer since i was about 16.  I've used about every combination of wedges you could think of and what works best for me is a gap wedge, 54 degrees, and a 58 degree wedge.  this allows me to play easily out of bunkers, hit flop shots, and take a more full swing from inside 100 yards with the 58, and to play shots from 100 to about 120 with my gap wedge.  this means that i don't have to try and baby a pitching wedge or over swing with a 56 degree.  for a lower handicap player having a gap wedge is almost a necessity and after a few rounds you will notice how much more comfortable you are over short shots into the green.
