a transparent plastic sheet cut exactly the same size as the table top and place on it. It helps sound-proofing the glass and it looks nice, just like being bare glass.

No definatly not. Glass is meant to see through and you can with a runner or tablecloth. If you want to dress it up, try doing something simple: a vase of simple flowers, a small stack of books, or a scrapbook/photoalbum. HOpe this helps!

it depends on what look you are trying to achieve. try using various colors and shapes of placemats, they are inexpensive and can easily be changed for holidays or special occasions

It really depends what the rest of the decor in the room is like. If you're going for more of a clean modern look, nix the tablecloth and keep the glass sparkling and vibrant. Like a previous answerer said, a nice vase of flowers would be nice to accent the transparency of the glass coffeetable, plus would make for some cool reflections. If you want a bit of color, why not paint a little design on the underside of the glass to add an accent which matches your decor? It would be fun and stylish at the same time.

If you have more of a traditional motif in your room, your could opt for a very thin, very short-trimmed runner or tablecloth. Just don't make it too long; people may think you're trying to hide something under the coffeetable!
