  1. It depends on where you are going to go. If you run down well-trodden paths to Western Europe, Tokyo, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Sydney, Beijing, etc., then it is very likely your bank has international bank/ATM partners and you can just withdraw local currencies at the exchange rate. For example, my bank is Bank of America and I pay no fees if I withdraw from a Deutsche Bank or a Barclays ATM. Thus, before you leave on your trip, call your bank and ask where you can withdraw cash with no penalties. That way, you won't be forced to carry large amounts of cash on your person to save on withdrawal fees. (Oh, and giving your bank a heads-up that you will be traveling will save the pain and suffering of trying to call long-distance should they put a fraud alert on your account.)

    Other things to research are:

    1) Countries that readily accept U.S. dollars (e.g., Ecuador, Belize, Indonesia/Bali, Kenya, or Tanzania).

    2) Exchange rates. A few countries offer better exchange rates for travelers checks as opposed to cash. (I rarely travel with travelers checks and always get a bit peeved when cash doesn't secure the best exchange.)

If you're asking whether to make purchases on your debit card...DON'T!!!!! Partner banks won't grant you immunity on this point, and you can often get 2-3 additional fees tacked on to EACH purchase. It's ridiculous.

Thus, get yourself one or two credit cards, preferably Visa or Mastercard since American Express and Discover are not readily accepted worldwide.

  2. You definitely do not want to use debit in Europe.

The fees would be outlandish. Euros is the best

way to go, or be a little fancy and get travelers checks.

That is the best way to secure your finance while in

    glorious Europe. Have fun!

  3. ATM machines are everywhere.  Your debit card is better than carrying money.  Also get an American Express card.  You can write a check on your U.S. account at most American Express offices for $1,000.00 or more per week, depending on the type of card you get.  American Express offices are most everywhere.  Check with them to make sure they have offices where you are going and that you are getting a card that meets your needs.
