  1. It's no more dangerous than anywhere else.   Just use your head.  Keep your passport in a pouch in your clothes and don't carry too much cash or expensive items.  It's rare, but on occassion buses are stopped and the passengers are made to get off and handover their belongings to bandits.  This is extremely unlikely to happen to you, but it does happen sometimes.  I used to take the local buses instead of the tourist buses since they are less likely to be stopped if I was carrying anything valueable.  Also, in San Salvador make sure you ride  only in legitimate taxis.  Get someone to call one from a restaurant or a hotel instead of flagging one down.  Otherwise the towns are small and you won't have any problems.  Just use common sense.  If you are a girl, don't go into a bar alone.  Stay out of dark places.  If you feel you are being harassed, find an older woman and ask her to help you.  If you are a man, you probably won't have any trouble.

Honestly, driving in traffic in Houston or walking through a parking lot in parts of LA are far more dangerous than visiting El Salvador.

  2. El Salvador's civil war ened a looooooong time ago. The gang violence is pretty high, but they only atttack members of rival gangs and, rarely, direct wittnesses. I went there last summer, in San Miguel. It was absoulutely beautiful. Visit it! You will not regret it!

  3. it is really beutiful there but it also depends on where youre going. my family and i went to san luis talpa in la paz and it was very beautiful. but just in case, keep a small amount of change in your wallet or purse.

  4. El Salvador is said by many to be the most dangerous area in the world.  The big cities are infested by gangs.  I stayed in Guatemala for a while and it was fairly safe in most places, but El Salvador is a whole other ball game.  My brother in law is actually there right now as a missionary.  I've been told that you should never rent a car there and depend on maps.  Always have a driver and know exactly where you're going.  Ask the hotel where you're staying if there's a reputable driver you can get a hold of to take you because taxi drivers have also been known to take tourists to back roads or scary neighborhoods and demand all their money.  It could turn out pretty bad.  You can even hire a body guard to go with you.

My advice, if you're looking for a good vacation, go somewhere else.
