I am very very nearsighted and can't see at all without my glasses. If the plane crashes then I will likely lose/break my glasses in the impact and i won't be able to see to get out of the plane. so isn't it safer to just wear contacts?

the airlines i am flying with are united airlines and sas scandinavian. are they safe?

  1. Plane crashes happen very rarely, and THOUSANDS of flights take off and land every day with no incidents.

I'd recommend wearing glasses instead - the atmosphere in a plane is very dry, and your contacts will dry out, too. If you do decide to wear them, be sure to bring a couple of small bottles of Visine for contacts (it works GREAT) in your Ziplock bag of liquids (more info on that here - http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm ).

You may also want to buy a couple of bottles of water once you get past the security checkpoint for the flight - I wish I had done that - and drink them on the plane throughout your flight. You'll find that you can dehydrate quite easily.

Just relax, try not to worry about the flight, and have a great trip.

  2. The chances of a crash are really not likely at all. It's best to wear glasses because it's better to wear glasses for longer periods of time. I'm sure they are safe airlines. You'll be alright!

  3. I think that contacts would be the way to go. Eight hours isn't bad for wearing, but what I did on my last trip was (since there is a limit to liquids on the plane) take my contact case, fill it with solution and put it on my carry-on, so if something weird happened or something got in your eye, you would have a quick fix. Whatever happens, contacts are easiest in most cases.

  4. Glasses. more comfortable, and you wont crash!

  5. I suggest glasses, last time I traveled with contacts, the air was so dry up in the aircraft that the contacts glued to my eyes, bad experience.

  6. No.  I'm very very nearsighted and I went to Russia for Spring Break through Scandinavian -- it was an 11 hour flight after the layover and everything.  You can't over like 0.5 liquids in our carry on, so what are you going to do if your contacts fall out or your eyes get really dry and they stick to your eyes?  I can't sleep with mine... plus, it's not safe for your eyes (your optometrist should have told you that).

Stick with the glasses.  What are the chances of the plane crashing and that it will actually break your glasses?  If I was in a plane that was crashing, I wouldn't be too concerned about my glasses or being able to see perfectly, I'd be more worried if we're going to die or not!
