Persons that are over 60 and/ or those receiving SSI could be exempted. Clients that are too ill (to attend a classroom setting) could take a correspondence course.

I think that this would make the applicant more employable. It would also deter a lazy person.

  1. I think this would be a waste of time and money. Its biggest accomplishment would be creating jobs for the administrators of such a program!

There are dozens of GED programs in most big cities.  I also don't think having or not having a GED will make a significant difference at the employment level most would be eligible for.  In other words, if you don't have a GED and are on welfare, I doubt the big hold up is getting a GED.  More likely you have no job skills and no experience.  The kind of job you can get doesn't require its employees to have a GED.

I'm not sure getting a GED is all that empowering for the average applicant.

  2. people shouldn't get handouts period...work hard that's what this country was established on.

  3. I agree that anyone on welfare should be doing everything possible to become employed again.

  4. No, since most of them aren't that book-smart--which is why they are on welfare.

  5. Give a man a fish... teach a man to fish....  Empowerment is definitely the key.

  6. Yeah, Welfare should only be for people who are TRYING to get a job and make something of themselves. I think a GED would help these people contribute to their community.

  7. Anybody who is getting money from the government, the government should do everything to get these people educated and ready to work.  Yes, I agree.

  8. No. You might want to do some research about what "welfare recipients" ARE required to do before you start developing policy.  I mean, you're not a "lazy person," are you?

  9. Well not have a GED because the majority dont and that is why they cant support themselves.  However I do think they should have to get one.  There's only one problem with that...welfare is cheap.  Recipients are required to work or go to school 32 hours a week, however they prefer you work and they give you a h**l of a time when you are attending school.  All they care about is dollar signs when they know that money is to be paid back by the father anyway.
