I'm thinking about getting a slow cooker, I work fairly long hours and hate having to prepare everything when I get home. Do you have any advice or recommendations for which type to get - or if they are even worth getting at all?

  1. I highly recommend them; they are definitely worth getting and you will love it.  I wouldn't recommend one brand in particular, but just make sure to get one where the stoneware part lifts out of the electric base.  That way you can put it in the dishwasher if you want to, and it is just so much easier to clean if it comes out.

  2. Slow cookers are wonderful. A friend of mine did a beef stew that I absolutely loved, so that helped convince me to invest in one. So easy to just toss in your ingredients in the morning, and let it cook itself without having to worry about it. Then dinner's ready with no stress (except for clean up =P).

I got a 5.5QT Rival Crock Pot Stoneware Slow Cooker at Sears for a reasonable price (though I think it was also on sale). And it works great for me.

Also got the Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook that has tons of delicious recipes to try.

  3. Slow cookers are great  !!  I have a Hamilton Beach, bought it at Wal-mart for around $40.  The best thing about it is that it has 3 different crocks that are removable. (this is a feature that you definitely want.)  A 2 quart, 4 quart, and a 6 quart.  The 2 qt. is perfect if your a single person or want to make a small appetizer, or you can invites some friends over and make almost a whole dinner in the 6 qt.

Go to your local bookstore and checkout the cookbooks especially for slow cookers - you'll find lots of great recipes that are really easy.

    Have fun !

  4. Definitely worth getting.  I love mine.  U have to prepare ingredients in advance which means u have 2 be organised and shop with a list but when you come home from work really tired its all there waiting 4 u.  I have a "rival crockpot" which cooks really fast, much faster than my old one which I can't remember which make it was but I used it so much it wore out! Shows how much I used it! Definately go for it.  U can use cheaper cuts of meat as u r cooking them slowly it is ok.  My advice go 4 it but be prepared 2 be organised  about buying the right ingredients and getting them cooking!  Go 4 it.  U can even put a whole joint or pork/beef or a whole chicken in it which works really great. Good luck.

  5. If you get a slow cooker make sure that the inside dish can be removed; also an oval one is better.

  6. I love mine.  It has two different inserts.  One is huge and can do a large ham, whole chicken or whatever.  The other insert is divided into two parts so you can do two things at once.

  7. Absolutely!  You can't beat the convenience of a slow cooker.   There are many, many recipes out there for all sorts of good stuff so you aren't limited to the usual selections of stew or pot roast.

  8. Everyone needs one. The bigger the better. 6 QTs should do it.

  9. I would totally recommend a slow cooker. There isn't a certain brand that I'm quite familiar with as the best, however, I do know that depending on what you are looking for, they are quite reasonable. I received my slow cooker as a gift, but I do know you can purchase them reasonable at Walmart.

I'm a big fan of starting the crock pot at 7:30am and coming home by 4:30pm and my supper is ready to go. You can do many recipes from appetizers all the way to desserts. I did see a cookbook at Walmart for crock pot recipes.

  10. Yeah they're pretty good especialy in the winter. I'm not to up on brand names, but I think tower do them.

  11. Yes, they can be a life saver for those of us who work and would like coming home to a ready meal. If you live alone buy the smaller 3 or 4 quart. Slow cookers work best when they are at least half full. Brand doesn't matter, but get one that is two piece. The crock itself fits into the heating unit. They are much easier to clean. Pick up a slow cooking cookbook. You'll find all kinds of ideas.

  16. Yes, I highly recommend a Crock pot ...... They are wonderful and I use mine alot prepare a meal the night before or in the morning before work and by the time you get home, it is done ...... an eight- to ten-hour Crock Pot recipe uses less than 25 cents worth of electricity ........ you could wake to a warm, creamy pot of cereal tomorrow morning .......the kitchen stays cool in summer ....... your stove or oven has more space available for big holiday or party meals ........ crocks are great for keeping food warm at potlucks or on buffets ........ you can transport dishes in them from location to location ........ and there is only one pot to clean after dinner! How great is that .......... some of them even have timers on them now which is even more convenient ....... Rival and Hamilton Beach are the two most popular brands and either will work just fine ....... I actually have 3 I use since I do lots of hosting ........ all mine are Rival but I hear Hamilton Beach is good too .........
