Should life in jail mean exactly that??

lIFE SHOULD MEAN LIFE. Life with maybe parole should mean that. If you sell a car and it's red, you wouldn't say it's green, so why say for life if it's not. 10 points.

Well I think people have the ability to change, BUT this kid is clearly violent. Has been on more than one occasion probably will be again. I think this particular child should be serving more than 12 years for brutally murdering a class mate. But then again, he is only a child. Life in prison should not be without the possibility of parole. It depends on the criminal and the circumstances surrounding the crime.

I was watching crime watch solved and people had done terrible things so they got life an i was thinking great till i found out life is only 20 years!! people'll come out of there and carry on where they left off it's ridiculos!!!!

A judge or a jury has to decide each case on its merits, if two people each kill two people, they have to be dealt with individually and not be grouped together.  The circumstances behind each case has to be taken into account and therefore one may get a so called life sentence and the other may not.  One of them may be a danger to society (women, children, old people) and that person poses a bigger threat if released than someone who is unlikely to be a threat to the same groups so the person who is the bigger threat should stay in prison until they die.  And yes I agree they should stop calling a life sentence, a life sentence, unless it means just that.  You also have being detained indefinitely.

Of course it should. I am gobsmacked that here in Scotland, you can murder somebody and be free within nine years. How must the families of the victims feel?? I admire the US system where life in prison means exactly that. We are far too soft on these monsters in Great Britain. I don't know if I would be able to stem my anger and not go after the murderer of one of my family when he/she is free to go about their lives , having only served a miserable nine years....

If something has purposely hurt someone, killed or raped another person they should rot.

To me, life should be just that.  Life in prison should be until the person is either killed in prison or dies of natural causes.  Life should not be 20yrs or whatever.  It should be LIFE!!!
