  1. They should be turned off.   Its a waste of energy.   If you find you need lampposts while driving it means you have a vitamin A + D deficiency.   Yea, I like having them too, and am also deficient in A + D.

  2. Are they not?

Mind you, don't they hold mercury (not good showered over the teenager that catapults the bulb).

The tightrope of environmental concerns is a balancing act.

  3. Yes it makes no sense to leave with the energy wasting ones . Traffic Lights have them in and they are plenty bright enough . Here in Ireland we have LED's in our street lights and there is no problem with visibility  also they turn them selfs of when it is bright enough so they are no longer needed

  4. Yes they should and i have just had to answer a survey on wether i think the street lights should be turned off at night so the councils are obviously looking to be more energy efficient

  5. Modern ones are.  I asked for the one outside my old home to be changed as i was unable to sleep properly at night with the bright orange light. They changed it for me!

Even low energy bulbs contain mercury.

  6. Yes, if they could be made bright enough....

  7. no they would not be bright enough

  8. Yes, of course

  9. Yes. the main highway lights are mercury or sodium lights, which are very efficient. Most housing areas still have conventional bulbs, and these could well be replaced with a better alternative.

I'm replacing my garden lights with LEDs. Not quite as bright but adequate and 1.5 watts instead of 50 w.

  10. LEDs. Bright, lasts long, and pretty efficient.

Or whatever they're developing today similar to LEDs.

  11. yes, the streetlight outside my house uses more energy than every light in my home put together.

what a waste. i would  pull down all the old sodium, metal hallide and mbf lighting in favour of the new tech curly lamps.

  12. The orange sodium lights they use now were introduced during miners strike for just this purpose.
