Question:

Should mileage reimbursement be contingent on what kind of car you drive?

Right now, the IRS price for mileage reinbursement is .505 $ (in the US). Should this price be more or less based upon the kind of car the employee drives? It only seems fair because with more expensive cars, the cost to repair them in generally higher. Likewise, larger vehicles (which are necessary for some jobs) eat gas at a faster rate.

Your thoughts? Why is this not done/taken into consideration?

  1. i think it does make sense i drive for a living and i would like a higher rate because i have a big truck but i didnt pay to much for it and make good money so i think it is fare the way it is for everyone.

  2. No, because people choose on thier own to purchase large or more expensive vehicles why should an employer pay more or the irs deduct more because someone chose to buy a giant SUV or BMW rather than a Honda Civic or Accord.

  3. no. you choose which car to drive. Mileage should be based on the gas consumption of a 'average' vehicle.  If you choose to drive a gas guzzler, then the extra cost is your responsibility.

  4. Our government is complicit in driving up the price in oil. I have long heard that oil  lobbyist buy pattens to keep cars from running on a 1/8th of the fuel. The government gets a full ride when it comes to their massive fleet of overpriced gas hogs. I don't think it's unreasonable to set the amount based on an average of like vehicles (compare full size trucks to full size trucks)  I don't know about you , but I cant do my job with a Honda Accord or an electric car.

  5. It would be unfair to pay people different rates. If you want to make out, buy yourself an economy car.

  6. It should be fixed lower than it is in order to punish people who insist on leaving behind King Kong-size carbon footprints. The way you want it is so it rewards people who insist on stomping all over the environment by consuming vast quantities of natural resources to move themselves around the planet. Obviously you are a democrat who wants the government to pay for your activities while you occupy a space on Earth.

  7. No, because it's up to you what car you drive.  No one is making you drive a bigger or more expensive car.  You can't ask anyone else to pay for your choices.
