Question:

Should my baby finches have gullets full of seed at 5 days old?

i can see through their gullets and it looks like a ball full of seed is this okay?

  1. Yes, this is normal. The hen deposits (shoves) food into the crop and it slowly empties out.

    I've not had experience with finches but with the birds I breed (lovebirds, bourkes, cockatiels and budgies) at 5 days old it should take around 2 hours or so for the crop to empty.

    Freaked me out the first time I saw a baby with a full crop. Looked like the skin was stretched so far it was going to pop.

  3. it will probably be fine if the baby doesn't seem to be having any health issues because of it. if at all possible, take it out but if it seems fine then don't bother stressing the baby out.
