Should my boyfriend accept a trainer position with his trucking company or try to obtain his own semi truck?

He has been with the company for a year and they thought he did a good job and asked him to become a trainer. he wants to own his own truck and become his own boss one day. With fuel prices rising the way they are it is hard to think about owning a semi truck right now. I am wondering how much do trainers make with trucking compaies. Please give me a detailed answer. I am trying to see if it will be worth his while to get his own truck.
