Should my family move to raleigh, NC?

we currently live on long island and up to now, this is the bigest decision we have had to make. below are our positives and negatives. Let us know what your opinion is?

Positives

1. Lower our expenses ( would have 100k less in mortgage)

2. No Traffic (husbanad commutes 3 hours a day).

3. we would make the same money as in NY.

4. friendlier people

5. better social life

6. husband went to nc state university.

7. love the lakes and outdoor activities.

8. lower taxes. Paying 14k in real estate taxes in nyc.

9. community oriented (club house, sub divisions, etc.)

10. better local colleges (husband and i would take clases)

11. We feel a bit out of place in NY. We're country music fans, love the small town feel, etc.

12. If we stayed in NY, we'd have to move closer to NYC because of my husband's job. He absolutley hates working in the New york city.

Negatives.

1. This is the bigest. FAMILY. our extended family lives in NY and are very close. Husband has 4 brothers he's sees every couple weeks. we are able to attend every family function. out children are extemely close to their couzins. our parents stop bye weekly.

2. we have a great house that we love.

3. better schools. ( this is a guess).

4. we would have to get a bunch of permits (pool, etc.) before moving.

5. bad real estate market.

6. better job market in NY.

  1. you're proably just bored!  Do you go through phazes?

  2. i dont kno but family will always be there and its not too long a distance. with the economy the way it is i'd say its in your best interest to move. However being that i just moved myself and am not yet settled in (its been less than a month) i can telll u its gonna be hard. your kids have to make new friends the reall estate market is not so good if your buying a house and you could lose money by not being able to sell the house your in. my advice is talk it over with your family. not us.

  3. I'm a Real Estate agent in Raleigh, NC so I thought I would answer your questions!  :)  I have lived in NC my entire life and LOVE it!  There are actually a lot of people moving here from NY lately.  Our housing market in NC actually is one of the best housing markets in the US.  raleigh was actually just voted as the #1 best place out of the entire US to sell a home.  We also have some of the very best schools around and have a great job market.  Please e-mail me if you would like for me to send you a relocation package with information on the area! (EvansL@hpw.com).  As far as your children moving away from you one day- unfortunately there is not much you can do if they decide to move for a job, family, etc. but I don't think your decision will make them feel like it's more "ok" to move away from your family.  Do what you feel is right to do & everything else will fall into place!  Please let me know if I can get you any firther info to help make your decision an easier one!  Good luck!

  4. I would move to Raleigh. Just from reading your lists, it seems to me that the positives outweigh the negatives. If you just move closer to NYC, your mortgage and property tax costs will likely go up and not down. (You should have seen the look on my face when I read 14K in property tax.) You're only guessing that schools are better in NY, but worst-case scenario, there are probably good private schools in Raleigh, and who's to say that the public schools aren't good too?

The bad real estate market that the country is in overall works in favor of the buyer, so that's actually a plus for you. And if you're worried about the job market, start looking for jobs there now, just to test the waters.

I think the only real big negative is that your family is in NY, but just make an effort to get to the family functions, and have them out to visit you too. And talk often.

  5. I'd move to NC. Meet half way for get togethers.

  6. Raleigh is great and you could use the money you save to visit family on special occasions. Plus with technology, you can still be close to your extended family. Schools are actually pretty good there, I have a ex boyfriend who grew up there and his parents were educators, they were pleased with it. You really have to do what is best for your immediate family. It sounds like the pros outweigh the cons.
