Question:

Should my fans face inside, or outside?

I have 3 windows all facing the same direction in 3 separate rooms, but I can open the doors in between the rooms. (No cross-draft available in the apartment)

1 room is my bedroom which is hotter than the living room during the day but cools off quicker at night. 1 room is the living room, and 1 is the kitchen which is always a few degrees hotter than even my room.

My question is, I have 3 fans. Which ones should be out-facing, and which in-facing, to cool off my house (especially my room) the quickest?

  1. Have the one in the bedroom facing in, this will cool your bedroom quicker in the evening. The other ones can face out to create a draft from the bedroom out.

  2. In-face your room. Out-face the rest.

  3. Kitchen fan: blowing out

    Living room fan: blowing out

Bedroom: no fan and window opened only part way.

Let the outflow from the other two rooms pull the cool air through the bedroom.  It sounds like it would be less efficient, but it really works better.

Have the fans as snug in the other two windows as possible. If they don't fit well, use cardboard or foamcore to make a blocking panel.

  4. All fans should be blowing the hot air OUT........then when the temp cools down in late evening, turn them to pull in the cool air....
