My husband has a rebuilt engine in a 2001 kia. He has to travel 4 hours to indianapolis and 4 hours back once a week untill the end of sept. (4 more times) right now a military van takes him there and brings him back home. He said he would get back home a couple hours sooner if he drove his car the whole way each week. (he is gone mon-thurs evening each week) He said the guy who comes to get him has better things to do but is still willing to go get him and bring him home. We have no money to spare and if his car breaks we wont be able to fix it. He says it will save the guy a trip. I say we cant afford his car to break from driving it long distances. Should he drive his own car?

  1. rebuilt engine in a kia??!?

  2. Why drive your car if he can get a ride ? If your car broke 4 hours from home how would your husband fix the car ? He may have to have it towed home at a large expense, plus the parts and time . I would have the company take care of it if they are doing it.

  3. its four more times..the thing is if that car is gonna break down..its gonna happen...he is thinking his time is too valuable to spend riding with someone else..i think mine would be too...

  4. If he has a ride, and it is reliable and safe, I see absolutely no sense in him driving on his own.  It's only once a week, getting home 2 hours earlier isn't going to make any difference.  I don't think it's worth it, either in terms of cost or convenience.

  5. When you said "a military van," does it mean the guy driving it is on government time? If yes, why is he "willing" to do it, isn't it his job?

If your husband is entitled to be driven by military van, why drive his own car?

On the other hand, your car might break down 10 minutes from home tomorrow and may not break down for another 5 years, nobody knows...

  6. Well the stop and go city driving is more stressful on a car than the highway driving.  If that couple of hours matters to the both of you then I would say let him drive the car.
