Question:

Should my kitten receive a shot for pain?

My kitten is getting spayed on the 3rd & the nurse sent me home some papers about extra things that I could have done while she was there.

One of the things was a Post-op Pain Shot. I was not offered this for my previous cat & my dogs did not receive one either. I don't mind paying for one, it's no big deal, but I don't wanna give her drugs that she doesn't need either.

So, do you think she needs one?

  1. It's probably really painful. I would get it for my kitty.

  2. I would say yes, as another person stated anyone or anything in pain doesn't heal as quick as someone or something not in pain. It is a physiological thing. I agree with consulting your doc, and online resources, they really can be helpful

  3. Vets who keep current with the latest research now offer pain medication after a spay.  Animals *do* feel pain after surgery, and that's now being recognized instead of ignored.  Much research has now been done on what pain drugs are safe for cats (there are fewer options for cats than there are for dogs), and they are safe when used as directed.  I'd suggest getting her the pain shot, I think it really helps in their recovery.  Even our local shelter's spay/neuter clinic uses pain injections post surgery!

  4. It's becoming increasingly common practice; it's not a bad idea, just keep in mind she will be groggy a lot longer after she gets home.  Ask any woman who's had a hysterectomy about the experience; you'll probably decide that pain meds are a good idea.

  5. Our clinic is owned and operated by a board certified feline vet and her experience has been that cats DO indeed have pain from the OHE (total hysterectomy) and cats in pain don't heal as quickly as a comfortable one. The little boys get an injection before they leave the clinic. The females get injection at the end of the day and are sent home with buprinex to start the next morning for several days. Hope this helps

  6. Ask your vet a little more about it, then see if you can make up your mind.

    I hope this helps!

  7. Pain control is always included in the price! Find another vet if they want to charge you extra.

  8. Yes definitely.  It's surgery and I'm glad your kitten is now being offered this.  I even go for the take home pain medication just in case.  The shot at the office is not expensive but especially w/ a spay I'd do it.  Look online to see what's involved and you'll be glad you did!!!  And if they offer pain med to take home, get it.  If it's not all used you can leave it in the fridge and if something ever happens that hurts a cat you'll have something until you can get to the vet.  I normally say no to the blood test but not on my last kitten just b/c as a kitten he almost died from anemia.  And if they can microchip at the same even better.  Get as much done while kitten is asleep, they don't like shots awake!!!

  9. Yes she does. It is a very humane answer to the pain that the cat can't complain about to you!

Thanks for asking and good luck with your kitten.

  10. It depends how she reacts to the surgery. Most cats are fine, its usually little dogs that don't cope well with the pain. I would say no, but tell them if she seems to be in excessive pain then go ahead with it.

  11. Look inot it and do what feels best for you and your pet but make sure you are both taken care of

  12. Think about it this way--if you had a hysterectomy, would you want pain medication afterward?  I would.  Abdominal surgery is definitely painful.
