It seems that its quite popular with girls in school, but is it too similar to basketball? Does women's basketball negates the inclusion of netball?

  1. Netball is not currently an Olympic medal sport. Many good sports are not Olympic endorsed. Two that are currently in, baseball and softball, are going to be removed from the Olympic program by 2012.

Netball is recognized by the IOC.  However, that is different than being a full Olympic medal sport. The IOC has different levels of recognition. The IOC recognizes many sports that are not, and may never become, Olympic medal sports.  Most likely, the fact that Australia or New Zealand has won every netball World Championship and Commonwealth Games it has been ever contested in, that's too much dominance (as evidenced by the US Softball team) to be considered for Olympic medal status.  Popularity is one factor.  Competitiveness around the world is another.
