i spank or soap in the mouth is fine i'd think. although parenting kids 30 years ago is child abuse now

I don't thnk it should be the first step in punishment. Some children do not respond to time-outs or "the look". If this is the situation, i agree with the first answerer, there is nothing wrong with a swat on the behind every now and again, just not for every single offense.

NO, UNLESS THE KID PUT HIMSELF IN DANGER AND YOU DO IT SO HE WONT DARE DO IT AGAIN, EVERY TIME I  SEE PARENTS HITTING THEIR KIDS UNFAIRLY I LET THEM KNOW IT IT DOESN'T STOP ILL CALL THE COPS BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN PARENTS  PULLING THEIR KIDS  HAIR, HITTING A 9 MONTH OLD BECAUSE HE REACHED OUT TO GET SOMETHING (SO WRONG), SLAPPING A 3 YEAR OLD, ONE TIME I WAS AT THE BANK AND THIS KID WAS OUT OF CONTROL TROWING PAPERS EVERY WERE, THE MANAGER CAME OUT AND ASKED WHO'S KID THAT WAS THE FATHER GRABBED THE KID BY THE ARM AND GAVE HIM A HARD SPANK  I WENT UP TO HIM AND TOLD HIM HE SHOULD BE THE ONE GETTING THE SPANK BECAUSE HE WAS WATCHING HIS SON TROW THE PAPERS ALL OVER, WELL THE GUY DID NOT PICK  THE PAPERS OFF THE FLOOR,  I ALWAYS HEAR PPL CALLING THEIR KIDS BAD NAMES LIKE THEY WOULD AN ADULT, SO WRONG, I PUNISH MY SON AND THAT WORKS FINE, AS SOON AS I SAY YOU ARE PUNISHED HE STANDS NEXT TO THE WALL TILL I SAY SO, THEN HE IS FINE, IF PPL HIT THEIR KIDS THE KIDS BECOME HITTERS I HAVE SEEN IT.

I think children need to know what's coming. The ground rules should be set, and then if it's appropriate I'm okay with spankings. Not every child reacts the same to it though, so you really need to know the child to know the proper way to discipline.

spanking { never in anger } is fine. BEATING a child is ABUSE and crosses the line !!!

I'm not for beating your children, but I don't think there's anything wrong with a little swat on the behind every now and then. Not for everything though.

after raising 2 girls an talking to them now that there 18 an 20, i have learned that yelling an physical punishment didn't do much, what was the most effective was 1st  taking away there favorite thing like a toy or not getting to do something like the computer or tv . 2nd  was grounding but not as effective.

they still tell me that taking there favorite thing worked the best, but you have to keep an eye on them. to know what there favorite is all the time.

my 20 year old still remembers me taking her pokemon cards for 3 weeks. for getting in trouble at school 7 years ago

Yes, it they won`t respond to words. My parents spanked me, and I turned out fine. All the c**p in the news about spanking being bad is stupid, and part of the reason the next generation will help further ruin society. They`re all selfish brats, who control their parents.

9 times out of 10 it shouldnt be physical. But yes, I think its sad that people in America think you shouldnt hit kids at all. Remember that thing called respect? Yeah kids used to give it at school. Wonder if it had anything to do with corporal punishment?

Yes, they should if the child is seriously misbehaving. I don't mean beatings of course, but some slaps and spanks will do the child good in these circumstances. And to the responder that said she was at the bank and someone's kid was throwing papers all around and throwing a tantrum, the kid deserved to get slapped! The father was right in doing so and it's none of her business to intervene. Not your kid, not your problem...unless it's obvious beating abuse of course. But I'm in favor of old fashioned parenting, not this new age, no hitting junk. You can't let your kid be the boss of you. You've got to be the boss of them.
