Question:

Should peacocks be allowed to roam free at public zoos?

I used to go to the Oregon Zoo as a kid and just heard that they will not be allowing the peacocks to roam free. These birds have been able to roam free around the park since it opened. The change was due to a little boy who got pecked, so naturally the zoo gets attacked by the super moms. There is only one other case in which this happened; the incident was minor and it was over 20 years ago. So, should the zoo change its policy because of one incident. Remember, it is a zoo not a theme park with roller coaster rides.

  1. I think they should roam free. But since there are too many people that choose to ignore safety rules everywhere you go then it messes things up for everyone. I have watched parents allow their children to go around and under safety bars and barriers. I have seen little kids chase these peacocks around which is not a good idea. The mating season is the time of year the males will display their feathers to impress a nearby hen. This is not a good time for anyone to chasing them cause they can get agressive. If you have an idea that will make parents keep their kids from harrassing the animals and not following safety rules then you can expect these kinds of changes.

  2. nooooooooooooooooooo, do u want innocent people being killed. na jk. if they do let them rome free it wud probably be a bad idea.

  3. Heck yeah.  The only idea of a zoo is to let people interact with the animals.  It's the stupid parents who don't want to watch their kids and they let the kids torment the animals then the kids get bit by the animals.  It's not like a peacock attack is fatal or anything.  If we were talking about letting cougers run free, that would be a little different.  Personally, I think it would be funny if they had the peacocks in a cage and if a kid misbehaves he gets locked in the cage with the bird for five minutes.  Seriously though, I've been to several zoos and parks that allow large birds like that to wander free and I love taking their pictures and I think it's great fun when they can do that.

  4. Yes, they should. I have to wonder what the kid did to the peacock. Maybe Kids should not be allowed to roam free.
