Question:

Should people be made to car share?

There are proposals in the UK to try out car sharing, where lanes are to be used only for cars with two or more people in, to cut down on congestion.

Should this be made compulsary for all car journeys during rush hour?

There would be half the number of cars on the road, which should speed up journeys. It would also be cheaper, as costs could be shared.

Could it work?

  1. What ARE you, a COMMIE? This sounds a lot like a solution they would come up with in a communist country.

  2. I live two minutes from the Leeds car share lane - mentioned on the news today because of new technology that can somehow read when there is more than one person in a car.  I work in an inner city area of Leeds and don't have anyone to car share with.  Therefore, I travel in the slow lane on said stretch of road.

  3. Yes, we do it here in the US.  The leftmost lane is reserved for carpools, meaning 2 or more passengers.  It works quite well.

  4. It would seem a good idea to encourage people to car share, particularly going backwards and fore wards to work. It can work, it did for me.

  5. Only in cloud cuckoo land. No chance of over-time lol

As long as the passengers do not smoke, speak to me, talk about football/cricket/ golf/ tennis or any other "sport" and listen to MY choice of music - AC/DC / Motorhead / Sabbath/ Purple/ Zeppelin and other nice melodic bands, - when they aren't interrupted by " black thunder 1"-  they are welcome to travel with me. I usually start work about 0400, and occasionally have to "double man" on deliveries with some one who I have nothing in common -, forced to listen to wogan & co for up to 12 hours - sheer torture!! The only way, would be to have "free Park and Ride", and staggered business hours,- why should offices only open 9 to 5  ? This causes the traffic hold ups.

  6. sure I'll share the back set with u!

  7. NO

  8. what about the business people that need to get to places and there is only them that need to go. e.g sales men.

  9. So if somebody has an important meeting 20 miles away, can they only attend if their neighbour goes with them?

  10. Non starter, any politician that tried to introduce such a thing would probably given the boot at the next election,

  11. NO people shouldnt be MADE to car share, encouraged, YES.

I wouldnt want a stranger in my car , because they probably wouldnt respect it.

  12. If they do make it compulsory then I will be biking to work and back.  This sounds selfish I suppose but I don't want to share my car with someone I am not 100% comfortable with.  I am not a morning person so therefore not good company before 11am so sharing a car with me at the time of day would be unfair and after work i just want to chill out with my music and do not want to be making polite conversation with a passenger during traffic jams.

  13. they already do it on the ring road in Bristol and it works well. I makes good sense. if two people work in the same place and live close then why not travel together. I've always said that. Even in the moderately small town where I live we get jammed right up at rush hour, its a nightmare.

  14. I think its a stupid idea. A car is more than just transport, its your own little space in the outside world, its your comfort zone, a place to wind down after a busy day at work - why would I want somebody else invading my space. We are not robots, this isn't "Coogan's Run"; proposals like this are just the latest waffle from an out of touch government only interested in lining their own pockets and keeping power.

  15. If I wanted to share my work journey with rude, obnoxious, ignorant plebs, I could do that already.

    It's called a bus...
