  1. Do you have patience?  Because SO will require that.  The kids don't move fast, don't think fast, and you can't yell at them.

Do you like kids?  Otherwise you'll be out of your mind.  It's chaotic.

Do you like puppies?  If you're the kind to fall in love with puppies, then stay away from SO.  You will fall in love with the kids, and a one-time event may turn into a lifetime of service.

Be prepared.  You may break a child's heart.  They get attached to you sooooo quickly, and remember you forever.  They will ask their caretakers about you for many days to come.  So if you don't want them to get attached, avoid personal relationships.

Be prepared.  They try SO hard.  They give their everything to all that they do.  If you're not ready to be inspired by the kids that have nothing but have EVERYTHING, you'll be floored.

I hope you decide to participate in SO, even as someone who directs traffic, because it is so worthy a cause.

    TX Mom

  2. The Special Olympics involves volunteers because it wants people to be educated about people with mental disabilities. In volunteering with Special Olympics, a person sees young people with mental disabilities in a new light: as athletes, as people with goals and dreams, and as people who want to celebrate accomplishments, just like anyone else. So volunteering for Special Olympics doesn't just provide free labor to the organization; it's part of helping to educate people about others with mental disabilities.

People who volunteer for Special Olympics will tell you that it is great fun. I did it just for two days, and I laughed so often at the energy and joy and fun all around me. It was a terrific natural high for me. It never felt like work.
