Question:

Should report or not report?

I live in Toronto.

Somebody hit my car from behind today. My sister was the driver at that time. The bumper got a few deep scratches and tiny dent but one side is sort of dislodged from its normal position (1 inch). He wanted to settle this personally and willing to pay $200 but we refused cause it could cost more to repair (I lease this car so I need to make sure it is repaired properly and up to the dealer's requirement).

If I report an accident to the collision reporting center, will my insurance company know? I still want to settle this outside insurance if he agrees to do pay after I get the estimate. But today is Saturday so I can't do find any mechanics to do the estimate until Monday.

Does reporting to accident means the insurance will automatically be notified or I can request the accident be kept away from the insurance until I decide to make the claim because he refuses to pay?

If the insurance will be informed all the times, how will this accident affect my rate? My sister insurance is not under my policy and this is not her fault. But I did have an accident 2 months ago. My insurance paid for that ($6000) because I just hit something on the highway myself.

  1. "Should report or not report?" it's a no-brainer in my book.  don't waste any time calling other guy's insurance agent.

    shouldn't affect your insurance.

Good move on turning down the $200, you can't get in the door of a body shop for that amount...it'll probably be $3000 or more before they're done.

  2. you need to at least file a policereport to protect your interests.
