Should sporting clubs ensure that players have a job?

Is the onus on sports administrators to see that retiring players of any code have something to fall back on, when their time is up ?

    its a simple case of people must be responsible for there own actions

    it seems a lot of footy players don't have much in the brains department

No.  Professional athletes make enough that the clubs shouldn't have to worry about their retired players' futures.  If they can't live on their prior earnings for a few years until they get a real job, then they've really made some bad decisions.  That isn't the club's fault.  It may suck but you can work at McDonald's and survive.  Pro athletes are no exception.
