  1. Yes the states do-- without the Federal Government--there would be no power or justice in the States.


  2. Yes, in fact they do under our federalist approach to government (as opposed to unitary systems such as that in France.) This approach allows states to act as "experiments in democracy", with ineffective practices limited in scope and other states able to copy practices and approaches that work well.

    That being said, I do not believe in unfettered federalism, either.  The mantra of unlimited "states' rights" was used to justify slavery and the Jim Crow system of segregation.  This same argument is present today as many states use their "rights" to discrimination against LGBT people.  There are civil rights that are inviolable regardless of whether a person  happens to live in Vermont or Alabama, and this is why federal laws are superior to any state laws.

  4. Yes! The original Constitution provided for the States, as board members of the "corporate body", to appoint the Senators, not by popular vote. This gave the States a direct check on the Presidency to balance the power. The 9th and 10th amendments make it very clear that the central government was to be subject to the States and the people.
