Question:

Should team leaders be getting you to do their tasks?

I've got this team leader at work and when I tell her that there's something she needs to deal with, she keeps making excuses not to. She's like - oh, do this, do that, even though she should be doing it and I'm not even trained to do those tasks. I don't think she should be making me do them. What do you think?

  1. A 'leader' is created by how well they can motivate others to do...giving those others the experience and opportunity to become leaders of themselves.

Your's may not have honed the finesse of such just yet, but deligating is an aspect of the job.

In a corporate situation, a manager hands down a task to someone underneath them...that task was passed down from someone above them...that manager, still responsible for the task being completed, opportunes you to follow through.  He/she will be watching what you become of such, weighing your ability and dependability of the challenge.  Those above the manager only care that it gets done, not how, but the manager cannot move up if there isn't a solid replacement in the works.  Deligating and giving that opportunity to someone within rather than hiring saves alot of time and money for the company, big plus for them as well--a good leader creates leaders...this is what the higher-ups look for.

If I were you, take the task, and hand it to someone else with a process and expectations of it being done--understand that you are still responsible that it is completed by your standards in a time frame that allows you to make sure of that.  When done, thank the person you gave it to, work with them if not up to par to bring it to such, hand it to your manager completed.

You have just 'managed' a task at hand...See???

    Good Journey!!!

  2. Its called deligation!

  3. Sounds like my boss.  I think it's lack of self-belief, either that or she's just c**p at her job

  4. time to put her stapler in a jelly its the only logical solution

  5. The advantage is that you learn. Learning of any type is always to your advantage. Many are asked, but few are chosen.

You are being prepared to do something else in Life, maybe not for there, but for somewhere else on a different situation. On the job training is another name for this. There is nothing I have ever learned that has not benefited me in some way or another.

What would be worse if that person never ask you to do anything new and chose to do it themselves. To your credit they value your ability to get it done.

Though I do not like the notion of imposition by the team leader, for the sake of your own mental health view it optimistically, the up-side, or advantages.

You have learned that sometimes and often times those who earn less money do more work and those who earn more money do less work. You are also learning lessons in humility, fairness, and what you do not want to do should you become team leader.

Use that education to become a better team leader when the time comes.

  6. Her technique seems to be working so far.

  7. Leaders leads,team members follows.
