Question:

Should the CFL sell the Grey Cup?

I saw an article on sportsnet.ca saying the CFL may sell naming rights for the Grey Cup trophy for as much as $10 Million per season. The article says the money could go directly to the franchises ($1 Million per team) if the plan goes ahead. Even though it will mean extra corporate support for the CFL, should the Grey Cup be renamed for that purpose?

  1. yes

  2. NOT!!!

  3. Yes, they  should sell it. You know that the league is not going to sell it to just anyone, like the" biggie size grey cup". The league will make 10 million just by having a corporation have their name in front. Plus, its not like people are going to call it by its advertised name, it will always be known as the grey cup. If you look at the economies of scale, it would be like selling the super bowl name and the league making 100 million, why not?

The CFL needs this extra revenue.

  4. Yes if the money is used to improved the competition. Someone mentioned the FA Cup, it's known as 'the FA Cup sponsored by E-on'.

So it could be 'the Grey Cup sponsored by Tim Hortons' . That way the cup retains it's name with fans & media & the company get some coverage too.

  5. no buy a super bowl

  6. Should they do it? Of course! Especially if it means survival for some franchises. On the other hand, do I like it? No, coporate naming of anything drives me nuts and debases the sport. Then again, I'm not going to complain if it means no more Ottawa debacles.

  7. Get used to it.  With what it costs to field a team it will not be long until individuals will not be able to own teams and all aspects of sports will be sponsered.  It will no longer be the BC Lions but the Petrocanada Lions.  They will play in any city that can fill the stands.

  8. Great, there goes another Canadian Tradition down the drain.

The first one was 'Bell' Canadian Open, I dont like the word Bell in front of a what should be a major league event.

It would then make the CFL truly a Second class citizen as compared to ... oh, i dont know, the Superbowl?

Then what next? Sell the rights to the Stanley Cup?

or better yet, could you imagine....

Glieberman and Sons Grey Cup!!!  What a crock of  $1#T.

  9. BAD Idea. Dont sell out to corperate suits. Have some sense and dont sell the rights to your trophy. I can only see me likeing somthing like Vectren presents the Grey Cup

  10. whatever works man.

we need more teams and a more solid league.

  11. They should just rename it the Warren Moon cup. I won that **** 5 times in a row.

  12. ya

  13. No Way!!!So the Cfl sells the name, gets money for each franchise, then the teams go over cap. Absolutly not

  14. It depends on how much they need the money... If that $10 Million means the difference between teams folding or not, then take it... If it's just greed, than it's wrong...

  15. Yes, quite honestly, the CFL needs every cent it can get its hands on.  I know it will upset the traditionalists, but even in England the FA Cup (English soccer's championship trophy, been around since 1871) has sold the naming rights.

People may be more accepting of it if they name it the way the Rose Bowl did ("The Rose Bowl Game presented by AT&T").

  16. not a chance that would remove the total canadian game we are not sell outs to any one, it's like selling your soul

  17. Yes because it would be the most awesomely cool failure in the CFL since the Ottawa Renegades!

  18. sure,

  19. No way...

Will we ever see the fedEx Lombarbi trophy ????

  20. Selling the Grey Cup would be, to me, anyway, sacriledge.  That would be like selling 24 Sussex Drive, or the Ambassador Bridge.

There are some things you cannot put a price on, and the Grey Cup is one of them.

  21. I saw the same article. If so, I guess that it would be something like;

The Labatts Blue Grey Beer Cup

    The Wendys Biggie Size Cup

Seriously, I think the line should be drawn. Stadium names are sponsored as well as ads on jerseys and on the field but at least keep the name of the prize as traditional as possible.
